  1. I don’t have much background in these coins so can’t help much with the coin but I like it! There many here that collect these so I’m sure someone who can help will be along shortly.

Otherwise, WELCOME! This is the best place on the internet to talk about ancient coins. In honor of your screen-name, here’s an Arcadius! Not my best but there are some Christian themes here that somewhat align with your coin.

  2. Great coins @Ryro and everyone else. I have a soft spot for Julian coins (along with every other Roman coin). I have quite a few and am making a slow run at a wreath coin from every mint. I have 8 photographed and a few unphotographed… then like 3 more to find (Cyzicus, Lyons, Constantinople) and several I’d like to upgrade.

    My Antioch like yours:

@LeoYou have a competitor in this forum thread.

@GordianAppreciator101 I suggest we join forces as the Gordian Gang to battle the Probus Patrol.

  4. Ok… so a follow up… I DO have two going bald Licinius coins! Both from Thessalonica. Only one is photographed. I never noticed!

…and then not to derail the thread further, back to your regularly scheduled Licinius GENIO AVGVSTI programming.

  5. These aren’t nice coins and the kiddos are hard to see but:

Two kids left on this VENVS FELIX (hard to see but they’re there):

There is also the first issue from Daia's mints which has eagle in field. Antioch with eagle was Daia-only, but the type exists for Licinius at Nicomedia and Cyzicus.

The Licinius Thessalonica specimen on your page is interesting in that it includes Licinius's bald spot... present on many, but not all, Thessalonica dies (even in gold) and some Siscia ones too. An oddly personal detail that is only seen at Licinius' own mints.

I wrote about this bald spot depiction a while back on the FORVM board:

Here's my RIC 72a with eagle:

Very interesting! I’ll be checking my early Licinius coins for that bald head! I love these cool details that may give a bit more insight into what these people looked like. Until today, I thought Carus was the only late empire emperor brave enough to show he was balding.

  7. Don’t feel too bad, it still looks good.

I had a Diocletian tetradrachm and a M Tiberius follis with bronze disease I was soaking. The water all evaporated and the coins sat for a few weeks before I remembered them… well instead of dealing with the bronze disease… I only added fuel and made it worse on both coins. 😬

  8. Great post, I really like the new coin!

  9. That’s a fun coin and a new target for me. I didn’t know the SPES coins were minted for him as Augustus. Like many, I find Julian a very interesting figure and find myself rooting for him when I read about him… even though I know how his story ends. I wish his coinage was a bit more diverse in bronze (where I can afford them!)

  10. @Prieure de Sion that’s a beauty! It looks to be in as-struck condition with great surfaces. Gordian has quite the nose here!

Here’s mine that I love for its style and uncleaned but beautiful surfaces. Most Gordian coins are well cleaned by the time you get them (if the can be cleaned). This one could be cleaned but in my opinion, would then loose much if its charm and what makes it special to me.

By the way, how’d that beautiful Aureus look in-hand when it arrived. I’d love to get one of those someday!

OOOOH! I recognize that tag style and have one from the same collection. At the time I purchased the coin I noted: “This tag indicates this coin is from the William C. Boyd collection that was auctioned by Baldwin's Auctions (42), 26 September 2005. The partial date at the bottom of the tag is the date Boyd purchased the coin. So 1900 here.“

I wish I knew what WSI, XII meant. Anyone know?

  12. Here are 3 fakes.

The Diocletian and Constans had me fooled but were cheap mistakes.

I bought the Constantius for $5 knowing it was fake but liked the “NOB C AVG” at the end of the obverse legend.

  13. A very interesting coin @Prieure de Sion!

What I like about this coin is that, although it’s clearly an imitation, we can know exactly which coin they were copying… which is much more uncommon in an era when many mints were operating.

    LiciniusIICyzicusRIC11Imitation.JPG.c9543acb6b86c55cae238a0e01bfa21d.JPG

    Imitation of:

DN VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C, laureate, draped bust left, holding globe, mappa and sceptre / IOVI CONSER-VATORI CAESS, Jupiter standing left, chlamys across left shoulder, holding Victory on globe and sceptre. Wreath in left field, Epsilon in right field. Mintmark SMK. RIC VII Cyzicus 11; Sear 15414.
