I haven't tried re-listing yet, but it seems a little strange...it says I have an incoming shipment ( I certainly do not) and additionally that I should leave feedback, both with strange codes, and no further interaction available on those action items. I suspect it's not feeling 100% yet, but we'll see.

I’ll look into this tomorrow, this is strange

Palms are commonly depicted on ancient coins. In the spirit of Palm Sunday, let's see them!

Palm fronds are often used as a design element, such as on these prutot:

    Judean Æ Prutah, 2.42 g, 17.2 mm.
    Caesaria mint, AD 54.

Rev: Palm branch surrounded by KAICAPO, LЄ (year 5).

Or a palm frond may be used as a mark in the field, such as on the obverse of this coin:

  3. First: Trolls, please don’t feed them 🙂 If a thread crops up that violates the spirit of our forum rules, like saying a dealer engages in fraud with no proof, please report the thread to me. That is the quickest way for me to be alerted to a problem on the site.

I wanted to also offer up an apology to the members here for my delay in getting to that thread. Work picked up unexpectedly the last 36 hours and admittedly I fell behind on forum duties.

In that spirit- I believe now the forum has become too large to be managed by just myself on a day-to-day basis, especially when I’m out of the country for work. This is of course a fantastic problem to have, and I hope the forum continues to grow and thrive as it has since its founding.

As such, I’d like to officially announce I am looking for 1-2 moderators to help manage the forum. Duties will be pretty straight forward: looking for threads or comments that violate the forum rules, and dealing with them appropriately. If you would like to be a forum moderator, please message me privately to throw your hat in the ring. I believe in being as open around this process as possible, and will likely look for input from everyone here as to who the moderators should be. I want everyone to feel comfortable that the people appointed to this role will preserve the spirit of Numis Forums as they fulfill their duties as moderators. I’ll close the application process midnight EST on Mar 29.

Why does my post still have to be approved by a moderator? I think it's obvious that I'm not an evil BOT. So my answers and the possible contributions of other users are delayed. Thanks.

In order to manage spambots one measure I put into place was to require 3 posts be manually approved (by me) in order to then have unfettered posting abilities. Know it can be tedious to wait but since implanting these changes our forum has been spam free so I believe it’s worth it.

Why sell them together? To boost PR for the auction? 'The only time two (of this original period) have been sold together (to our knowledge)'. They're not unique so it's not like they don't come up.

It's also a bit strange to sell one of them with no provenance at all, especially now they've boosted the price to the cost of a large house. Isn't there meant to be some sort of problem with doing that?

Very confused by this as well. This coin is massively out of my price range so perhaps those who can afford coins at this level would have a different POV, but I’d imagine if I could afford this coin, I would only want/need one for my collection.

  6. @DonnaML Correct, I recently created this forum at the excellent suggestion of @LONGINUS

I’ll comb through existing posts to see what I can find that should be moved here but if anyone has made a post that should be here feel free to PM me with the link(s) to the thread(s) (or tag me in the thread itself) and I can move that way too. And thank you @lordmarcovan for offering your photos to use as for the thumbnail!

  7. This bit from the article puts me squarely on the side of the couple:

    Quote

The couple alleged that the dealer also approached their gardener to get more information about their family and their ancestry to deduce the authenticity of the piece before consulting the auction houses, court records said.

According to the lawsuit, the dealer split the money from the sale with the gardener.

So the dealer went to these people’s personal gardener to gain more information on provenance, and then split half the $4.4M with the gardener! Why didn’t he go back to the couple for his provenance questions? Because then he’d have to fess up to the value! This dealer sounds like a real piece of work. I hope the couple gets every cent he made from the sale, and then gives him $158 as a consolation 😂

  9. Hiding certain posts that veered off topic, both the off topic posts and the replies that quoted them to help ensure the off topic convos don’t continue. Let’s all try and keep the discussion on topic here, and respectful. My preference is always to not have to lock threads if possible, so let’s please keep things within the forum rules or I will have to.

It also goes without saying that trans rights are human rights, and trans people are welcome on this forum and we shouldn’t create an unwelcoming environment for them.

Now with that said, to go on topic… as a member of the LGBT community this has been an interesting decision to say the least. The only evidence we have to consider that Elagabalus was trans comes from sources who hated him. Roman men were supposed to be “manly” (whatever that means) so the greatest insult a Roman senator could levy on someone is to make him as feminine as possible. Elagabalus loved the eastern style and made no qualms about it. He was a foreigner to the elite in Rome, refused to conform to their belief system, and had a relative who many believed could “play ball”, which ultimately led to his assassination. He was also a teen. Talk about an easy target to degrade! It feels… off, to label Elagabalus as trans when it was meant as a way to insult the emperor at the highest degree. It means we are validating the criticism of him, and supporting the senators who hated him, with no actual basis in fact. All we know for sure is he existed, he was born a male, he had male and female lovers, he was an emperor, and he was assassinated. If we remove the insults thrown at him, I don’t see enough evidence to call him anything other than bisexual. Just my 2 cents.

I experienced the same issue last night.  I thought I was having an issue with cookies.  When I checked to see how many I have in the system, it turns out that there were cookies for over 24,000 sites!  So I cleaned them out, though now I have to recertify myself for sites that I visit often, such as this one.  I guess this was a postive result for an issue that really had nothing to do with cookies.

May want to double check that the Cookie Monster hasn’t been secretly using your computer 😆

Yeah I just hate deleting the file altogether and creating a new one to just change the picture. But you know what's worse? the admin kicking me out without any notice and reasons, and no reply for my emails. I would've gone to a different gallery, but I didn't see a better alternative so I made a new account. I still catalogue my coins there till I find a new place, until then I hope they don't deregister me again!

I wish Numisforums has the option of personal galleries?! @Restitutor

    Will look into this 😃

    I agree!

And the "Roman Empire" section of this forum is notably bustling with activity - it's the most active among all sections. However, the Roman Empire spans a vast period of time. Would it be prudent to consider dividing it into two distinct sub-sections: "Early Roman Empire (27 BC - 284 AD)" and "Late Roman Empire (284 AD - 641 AD)"?

Presently, the content within the Roman Empire section is rather amalgamated, which at times appears disorganized in my opinion.

What about "Roman Empire - Period Edward Gibbon Liked" and "Roman Empire - Period Edward Gibbon Didn't Like" 😁

It is an interesting idea, will take it into consideration!

Holy Cow! That really answers the question of whether coins of different eras circulated simultaneously. So I guess they did. One wonders if they were tariffed at the same value based on silver content which was only around 40% by the Severan time. Probably the emperors required full value exchange regardless of the issuer, otherwise we'd probably see clipping and other activities by the unscrupulous.

Crazy to think this person owned an array of coins (32BC-270AD) that spans a period of time longer than the US has been a country.

  15. Curtismo, I appreciate your thoughtfulness and thoroughness in outlining some of the pain points on mobile. I have a feeling some of these changes are implementable and others will be hamstrung by Invision limitations, but let me digest the request and investigate over the next 48 hours (just had an out patient surgery on my arm today so a little sore typing/coding 🙂) . I do agree with everything you’ve outlined so I’ll do my best to make the changes.

As regards the home feed look and view… this was probably one of the discussion points when we first launched and I know the community was pretty evenly split at the time whether to have this fluid feed or a traditional forum feed. There is the ability to toggle the view by selecting a different button here:

    IMG_9203.jpeg.d6b99dedddf0f05769d073a98e1b0a0f.jpeg

The middle button, the four squares, will alter the forum feed back to a more traditional forum layout. I do like the idea of featured posts and will look into this as well!

  16. Hi Everyone,

With the rapid expansion our forum has had over the last year+, I wanted to bring some clarity on a topic that I believe will help keep the forum running smoothly.

    On-Topic/Off-Topic Replies

It goes without saying, but a reply to a thread should stay on-topic. I believe the overwhelming majority of replies on threads adhere to this principle. However, every so often, a reply (or multiple replies) veers off-topic. These off-topic replies have a tendency to stymie further relevant on-topic discussions, and generally just introduce un-needed clutter in a post. As such, I want to clearly state that any off-topic reply will be removed at the discretion of the Admin (me). If the entire reply is off-topic, I will simply 'Hide' the reply; if only a portion of the reply is off-topic, I will edit out that portion and replace with the text '[Removed by Admin as off-topic]'. I also want to highlight the usage of the word discretion; given that the goal with this rule is to help maintain the flow of the thread as intended by the OP, I will use my discretion to determine if an off-topic reply is having an unwanted effect. If you believe a reply is off-topic, please feel free to 'report' it to me so I can check it out.

And that's it! I hope by now everyone here knows that I like to moderate this forum with a light touch, thanks in no small part to how well everyone here interacts, so please do not view this as me saying things are suddenly going to ramp up out of no where, as that is certainly not the case. My intent with this post is simply to clarify and clearly outline my thought-process on this topic.

Please feel free to private message me, or respond directly here on the thread, with any questions.

  18. Hi Everyone,

I want to first off say upfront that the position of NumisForums continues to be that we are a site where we, the members, can discuss any relevant numismatic topic freely, pursuant to the forum rules of course.

I have received a request from Katz Auction House to have this thread removed. I want to first preface that as the founder & admin here, my goal in instances where allegations arise is to present a platform where all views can be discussed, while retaining the impartiality of NumisForums itself. I believe this is the best course of action to keep the forum open and not hit with any sort of legal troubles. As such, I believe it is correct that I post the Katz request in full, so that they may provide their side. Here is the full unedited text:

I am writing to formally lodge a complaint against a recent thread that has been posted on your forum, which concerns the Katz Auction House. It has come to my attention that the thread in question, authored by an individual identifying themselves as ''dafydd" contains false and damaging accusations against Katz Auction House, without any substantial evidence to support these claims. We kindly request the immediate deletion of this thread to prevent further harm to the reputation of Katz Auction House. The thread titled "Katz Whistleblower" accuses Katz Auction House of engaging in fraudulent activities within the numismatic world. The author claims to have worked for the auction house and alleges various illegal practices, including hidden reserve prices, fake sales, and market manipulation. While we understand the importance of transparency and accountability within the numismatic community, these allegations are entirely baseless and without merit. Katz Auction House has a long-standing reputation for integrity, professionalism, and fairness in its operations. We take great pride in providing collectors and numismatic enthusiasts with a reliable platform to buy and sell valuable collectibles. Our team is committed to upholding the highest ethical standards, and we have never engaged in any of the activities described in the forum thread. We believe that this forum post is not only false but also defamatory and damaging to our business. It has the potential to mislead collectors and tarnish our reputation, which has been built on trust and integrity over the years. Furthermore, the author of this thread claims to have attached screenshots as evidence of their allegations. We urge you to thoroughly investigate the authenticity of these screenshots and the credibility of the individual making these accusations before allowing such unsubstantiated claims to remain on your platform. We kindly request that you take immediate action to remove the thread in question and any associated attachments to prevent further dissemination of false information that can cause serious harm to our business. We are prepared to provide any necessary documentation or information to support our position and demonstrate the baselessness of the claims made in the forum thread. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. We trust that you will take the necessary steps to address this issue promptly and responsibly to protect the reputation of Katz Auction House.”

I will reiterate again that NumisForums itself and I as the founder & admin make no claims to the validity or otherwise of the alleged whistleblowers’ claims, and that Katz is of course innocent until proven otherwise, and the burden is on the accuser, not the accused.

With that said, I do not believe it is against the forum rules to discuss topics such as these (the Roma thread is another instance), insofar that we don’t make any defamatory or libelous statements here. As such, I will leave the thread open as long as the rules continue to be followed, however I have edited out portions of the OP that skirt the line of defamation, IMO.

If any lawyers on here would like to private message me to let me know if my approach is incorrect, please feel free to do so, as I am not a lawyer myself and any advice is appreciated. 🙂

    Thanks,

    Res/Luke
