ValiantKnight Posted January 5 · Member Share Posted January 5 Researching these a bit it seems the standard weight for these should be 4.25-4.3 grams, but what is the overall normal tolerance/range for Abbasid-era dinars that are not clipped or otherwise damaged? I see many that are like 4.15, 4.17, etc that at most have a bit of wear but don’t look damaged or at least to me don’t looked clipped. Thanks for any information on this! 2
panzerman Posted January 6 · Member Share Posted January 6 I have noticed that too. Weight varies even more in Mamluk/ Bahri AV Dinars. Ayyubids/ Ilkhanate/ Saminids also vary in weight. Here are two of my Bahri Mamluk Dinars Baybars I weighs 7.29g/ Hasan 5.68g. 4 1
Glebe Posted January 6 · Member Share Posted January 6 (edited) The weights of the earlier Umayyad dinars were tightly controlled, but in later times this was abandoned and these coins presumably traded by weight (so there would be no point in clipping).
