maridvnvm Posted December 6, 2023 · Member Posted December 6, 2023 I have lost control. I have been distracted well away from my collecting focus areas after being offered pickings of a small British private collection. Amonst them was this. The grade isn't great but I think the bust is relatievly scarce. I will share some more of my pickings later. Heroically nude busts of Aurelian appear to be relativey sparse on the market. Aurelian -Antoninianus Obv:– IMP AVRELIANVS AVG, Radiate bust left, nude with cross-belt, seen from rear, holding spear pointing forward in right hand, shield on left shoulder Rev:- IOVI CONSER, Emperor in military dress standing right, holding short sceptre in left hand, receiving a globe from Jupiter stg. left, holding long sceptre in left hand Minted in Serdica. (//P). Issue 2. Autumn – End A.D. 271 Reference:– RIC 260. BNC p.391. RIC temp #2573 3.34 gms, 22.30 mm. 180 degrees 17 Quote
Tejas Posted December 6, 2023 · Member Posted December 6, 2023 This bust is certainly very rare for Aurelianus. Great choice. Quote
Humilau Posted December 7, 2023 · Member Posted December 7, 2023 Nice one! Hopefully there are some more rarities in that collection you picked up (hopefully any Probus from Siscia amongst them haha). I've been fairly picky about what I've wanted to add to my collection for the heroically nude busts. Many of Probus's ones are from Ticinum, but I wanted a Siscia. So far my only two examples are from Siscia being a Claudius II and a Probus. Surprisingly, the Probus is the more scarce of the two for the mint of Siscia with only just a few known which works better for me since thats my specialty! I was quite pleased about this example as it was the specific one out of the two obverse dies for the mint that I wanted. Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted December 9, 2023 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted December 9, 2023 So Probus got the idea from Aurelian? 1 Quote

I have owned quite a few Probus = Heroically nude. I hadn't realised how many AUrelian variants of this bust there were until I looked. 1 1 Quote
