Captch Posted August 20, 2023 · Member Share Posted August 20, 2023 I just identified an uncleaned coin as a provincial issue of Philp the Arab - I think it's this coin, up to the regnal year. I've attached a pdf highligthing which features are visible when the coin is wet. It's been in distilled water for ~15 months now and I'm not really sure there's anything else to clean off. I am able to see the details highlighted in the slides when the coin is wet, but the thing looks like a total slug when dry. Is Renwax a good solution for making the details pop? Will an outer layer of Renwax allow the coin to repatinate? I dug down to bare metal in the center of the reverse not knowing what I was looking at. What are good next steps for cleaning? dirty_phil.pdf
hotwheelsearl Posted August 21, 2023 · Member Share Posted August 21, 2023 Well I couldn’t download the PDF. Generally though, sodium hydroxide is a good solution. Often strips off whatever panting was present though. Ren wax tends not to allow the coin to really patinate naturally, but will allow some details to pop.
