Two ordinary denarii of Faustina II, OR NOT?

Here are two new Faustina II denarii in my collection.

Quite ordinary, or not after all 🙂

Let's make a little game out of it.

Can you see what makes these denarii unusual?

  • shanxi changed the title to Two ordinary denarii of Faustina II, OR NOT?

I am very interested to see what's the mystery here (and I'm sure it is 😄 )

For the first one I can't see any difference to RIC 500b Pius. Still searching but scratching my head.

The second - Is it a rare variation of RIC III Marcus Aurelius 688  without peacock?

Faustina II looks more like Faustina I,

If you mean the hairstyle then you are right. It's not exactly a Faustina I hairstyle, but a rare Beckmann type 3 hairstyle.

For comaprision: This is the regular RIC 500b

  • 1 year later...

I have a Faustina with the continuous obverse legend on the way. That legend was driving me crazy.

Faustina II AR Denarius, RIC 500b, RSC 44, BMC 1078

I am glad to learn that it can be continuous and still be attributed as such, that I have it right.

The one on Wildwind' was quite separated.

As for her hair? Only her hairdresser knows for sure (Miss Clairol) but I will post soon to see what hairstyle you think she has on my coin.
