A Masterpiece of Roman-Egyptian Coinage

While browsing through CNG's Coin Shop offerings I spotted this breathtaking Alexandrian drachm that sold for $16,500.00 😲!

EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian, AD 117-138 (dated RY 16, AD 131/2). AE Drachm: 29.09 gm, 36 mm, 11 h. One of the finest specimens known, superior to any recorded in RPC or Coin Archives. The coin has a lengthy provenance going back to 1936. Coin Shop #5624340.

The reverse design on this coin of the emperor riding on a slow victory quadriga was used on may Roman provincial coins. I have a crude example of this type used on a Gordian III bronze pictured below.

Hadrian's coins in particular are of great artistic value. Even for the small purse you can get really nice coins.

Two lovely portraits, thanks for posting 😍. Many of Hadrian's portraits make effective use of of the back view 😉. Pictured below is a Tetradrachm of Hadrian from my collection also using a back view.

My only Hadrian from Alexandria is a tetradrachm that was affected by corrosion. Honestly, it was the "best" spot as it doesn't obstruct the design and I really like it.

That's a rock solid provenance on a very attractive Tet 😊.

The reverse impression on your Tet is especially strong 😉.

Two Hadrian drachms are in my possession...the first example features Alexandria greeting Hadrian. The second features a reclining Nilos with a crocodile

Two handsome drachms with attractive reverse designs 😊. The reclining Nilus reverse is one of my favorites 😍.
