antwerpen2306 Posted December 18, 2022 · Member Share Posted December 18, 2022 Antoninus Pius, AD 138-161 ANTONINUS AUG PI US PP TR P COS III OPI AUG 18 mm, 3.08 gr, 7 h Ric III,77, mint Rome 140-143 I have bought this coin 40 years ago in Madrid with some other coins in a shop near to the Plaza Mayor. I did not know at that time it was a rare coin and the seller also did not. I've bought it for the nice obverse side and a good reverse one....and did a good buy for, thr price I've paid. Please, show your rare denarii,. 18
Roman Collector Posted December 18, 2022 · Patron Share Posted December 18, 2022 That's lovely, and one you don't come across every day. Although Strack records specimens in Berlin, Paris, and Vienna, the British museum also has an example, as does the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the museum in Valencia. There are only a handful that have been sold at auction in recent years, per acsearchinfo. Nice pick up! 2
Marsyas Mike Posted December 18, 2022 · Member Share Posted December 18, 2022 Nice coin, @antwerpen2306 - I'd like to land one of those some day. I do have two Antoninus Pius sestertii with Ops on the reverse - unappetizing condition, but they are hard to find, especially in my price-range: It'd be interesting to know why Antoninus Pius featured Ops on his coinage - according to a diety search on OCRE, the only other emperor to put Ops on coinage was Pertinax: http://numismatics.org/ocre/results?q=deity_facet%3A"Ops" 7 1
