I am constantly on the lookout for new coins to add to my collection of Eastern Septimius Severus issues. I wait for something slightly interesting to share before I deluge you with them.

This one is from the IMP VIII issue (Laodicea-ad-Mare in RIC and BMCRE) and I thought that I would share it along with some context around it.

Firstly the new coin:-

Obv:– L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII., Laureate head right
Rev:– FORTA REDVC, Fortuna standing left holding rudder and cornucopia
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 194
Reference(s) – BMCRE -. RIC IV -. RSC -

2.67 gms, 19.60 mm. 0 degrees

The coin isn't in any of the major references but it is not necessarily unexpected.

The FORTA REDVC variant of the legend is listed in the major references but with Fortuna with rudder seated rathe than standing

Obv:– L SEPT SEV PE-RT AVG IMP VIII, laureate head right
Rev:– FORTA R-EDVC, Fortuna seated left holding rudder and cornucopiae
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 195 - 196
Reference:– BMC W442 note (citing Cohen). RIC 479 (citing Cohen). RSC 170 (Cohen 170, Elberling Coll.). RD (1 example)

Both types are also known with the more normal legend FORT REDVC

FORT R-EDVC, Fortuna standing left holding rudder and cornucopiae
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 194
Reference:– RIC 477 (Scarce, citing Cohen 164 (Paris)). BMCRE page 111 also citing C. 164.

Obv:– L SEPT SEV PE-RT AVG IMP VI-II, Laureate head right
Rev:– FORT R-EDVC, Fortuna seated left holding rudder and cornucopiae
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare, A.D. 195 - 196
References:– BMC W438. RIC 478 (S). RSC 166

This is one of a few of these that I have...

I also have a Fortuna seated example from the peculiar longer SEVER sub-issue

Obv:– L SEPT SEVER PERT AVG IMP VIII, Laureate head right
Rev– FORTA EDVC or FORT REDVC (R corrected from A), Fortuna seated left holding rudder and cornucopia
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 194
Reference(s) – BMCRE -. RIC IV -. RSC -
