List of ancient Roman priests (names) - PDF Download

Information about famous personalities at the time of the Roman Republic - or later - about Roman emperors and their relatives can be found very often and usually a lot. It is more difficult to research less well-known people from the second row. Particularly in the times of the Republic, there is not much to be found on such persons.

I have received a small PDF list that may fill another gap here - names of priests from the time of the Republic and the Roman Empire. The PDF is available for free download.

It is in German, but you can search for the name in the PDF using the full text search - and if you find a hit, you can have the text translated.

The history of religion is always also a history of people who lead colleges, make decisions about building projects, crisis rituals or property relations, as well as about the application of rules and the interpretation of texts. In Rome, it was often the high magistrates who filled priestly positions; prominent religious functionaries such as Christian bishops gained political power. This encyclopaedia offers over 800 short biographies of influential religious specialists in ancient Rome between the 3rd century B.C. and the 5th century A.D. Listed are all pontifices maximi (and thus emperors), vestales maximae and episcopi, but also all consuls for whom a priesthood can be proven. Special emphasis is placed on the chronological classification of the priesthoods in the political career and on the documentation of activities that seem to be motivated by the religious function. References and a detailed list of sources round off the volume.
