What's going on with this lettering?

Awhile ago I noticed this denarius come up for sale. It's quite nice with a great portrait style. But the reverse legend has me wondering - particularly the "PONTIF" - looks like it's been...what? Double struck? Zealously cleaned/smoothed? Tooled? I don't know. Whatever the case, it looks a little weird. I'm hoping someone here can give me an idea.

Probably slight double-striking on the letters PO on the reverse.

That's what I'm thinking too. On closer examination I seem to see a very slight doubling of the dotted border too, at about 5 o'clock.
