CPK Posted September 24, 2022 · Supporter Share Posted September 24, 2022 Awhile ago I noticed this denarius come up for sale. It's quite nice with a great portrait style. But the reverse legend has me wondering - particularly the "PONTIF" - looks like it's been...what? Double struck? Zealously cleaned/smoothed? Tooled? I don't know. Whatever the case, it looks a little weird. I'm hoping someone here can give me an idea. 6
Etcherdude Posted September 24, 2022 · Supporter Share Posted September 24, 2022 (edited) Tiberius’ eye is crudely placed and oversized. I’m wondering if this is a barbarous imitation. Edited September 24, 2022 by Etcherdude
Roman Collector Posted September 24, 2022 · Patron Share Posted September 24, 2022 I'd go with the die-cutter re-engraving those letters to make them stronger. "Quality control" that didn't quite work right.
curtislclay Posted September 26, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 26, 2022 Probably slight double-striking on the letters PO on the reverse.

That's what I'm thinking too. On closer examination I seem to see a very slight doubling of the dotted border too, at about 5 o'clock.
kevikens Posted September 26, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 26, 2022 Double striking with a slight shift of the planchet or one of the dies between the strikes.
Mucius Scaevola Posted September 28, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 28, 2022 There's nothing wrong with the eye. There were several issues with different styles over the year. I'd vote for the double strike, too.
