Valens (younger brother of Valentinian I, reigned as Emperor in East AD 364-378), AV Solidus, Treveri (Trier) Mint, 1st Officina, issued 376 - mid-377 AD after death of Valentinian I [see Depeyrot pp. 77, 121]. Obv. Pearl-diademed (with double band of pearls held by single rosette gem at top), draped, and cuirassed bust right, DN VALENS – PF AVG / Rev. Valens & Gratian enthroned facing in single large throne, each with left leg uncovered and right hand on a globe between them; above and behind, Victory facing with wings spread; palm-branch on ground between them; VICTOR – IA AVGG around; in exergue, mintmark TROBC [TR = Treveri Mint; OB = “obryzum, which means refined or pure gold, and is the Greek numeral 72. Thus the . . . British Anglo-Saxon. Primary Sceattas. Circa AD 700-710. AR Sceatt (12mm, 1.17 g, 2h). Series C imitation(?). mint in Kent(?). Obv: [Radiate] head right; annulet and A to left, epa in Runic to right. Rev: Standard with degraded TOT II legend around; [crosses?] in margins. Ref: EMC 1986.8686 (same rev. die); Abramson 4.70; SCBI 63 (BM), –; SCBI 69 (Abramson), 93; cf. North 41; cf. SCBC 779. Good Very Fine, attractive bluish toning, die break on reverse. From the Ealing Collection. CNG note: Reportedly found in South Humberside (not recorded in EMC). The cited EMC specimen shares an obverse die with SCBI 69 (Abramson) 93, linking the fine style bust of this coin with a remarkably crude bust. Ex CNG 111 (29 May 2019), Lot 1043.

Genius standing left, modius on head, naked except for chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and cornucopiae; GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI (RIC VI, 52a). Ex Lord Stewartby. From the Falmouth (Cornwall) Hoard 1865. Two labourers ploughing a field discovered 600-1000 3rd-4th century bronze coins. They were surrounded by black material that crumbled in their hands. The Christie’s catalogue in 1970 listed 584 coins ‘The Property of Mrs Janet MK Fox of Falmouth...all in a rather corroded state and stacked in neat rows.'

Obv: AYT K Γ MЄ TPAIANOC ΔЄKIOC CЄB; Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from rear; °° below. Rev: ΔHMAPX ЄΞOYCIAC; Eagle standing right on palm frond, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak; S C in exergue. Ref: RPC IX 1708; Prieur 579 (33); McAlee 1125b. Very Fine, edge flaw at bottom of bust, nicely toned.

Obv: ✠BOAMVNDVS; Helmeted and mailed bust left, chain mail composed of downward crescents, no crescent or star in fields. Rev: ✠ANTIOCHIA; Cross pattée; crescent in second angle, trefoil in legend. Obv: Metcalf, Crusades 78b. Near Extremely Fine. From the inventory of a UK dealer. Ex Roma E-Sale 80 (4 Feb 2021), Lot 1853. Ex Roma (18 Aug 2022), Lot 92. Misattributed in both auctions.

Champenois comb surmounted by a T between two inverted crescents; PRVVINS CASTRI (of the Castle of Provins). Prograde S (Poey d'Avant 5972). Found in Billingsgate spoil from the Thames foreshore in the 1980s.
