  1. No objections here. I really liked the emojis and the mood choosers there but one non-political 'general' topic' really convinced me it was time for me to pack up. I haven't checked back since. We're not the thought police🥸. You're free to cross-post anywhere, although that's very considerate to ask. Cross-posting can also educate more people and generate more interest in the hobby.
  2. It is indeed stylish! So that's what denominations these are!
  3. That's a pretty cool acquisition, and an emperor that I'm missing. I have an AV Johannes, but no Valentinian III. By the way, how do you change the title when editing? I'd like to pick up a Rome Val. III some day.
  4. I've seen posts of how Alexius I enacted reforms where people would pay more if they used the debased coinage, but I wonder how the general population/money changers handled the situation? The AV content also varied widely during 1071-1092. They must have stayed in circulation for some time, as many are only F or VF. I'm not quite sure how to search for them, but I've seen Alexius Tetertera and various anonymous folles on vcoins with Islamic counterstamps from the 1150's. And I think some of those Islamic regimes were in Syria and Northern Iraq. Very interesting!
  5. It's nice! I'd use a little bit different color for a silver coin (kind of blends in with the background), but well done! It's eons better than my attempts.
  6. I got my posthumous Lysimachus tet at a c. 2002 coin show from Jon Kern. He had a whole pile of them, and it was a high-end pick bin. Mine is nice VF, but has a ding on the cheek. I think it was $175. I hope to photograph it when my coin photography becomes less incompetent.
  7. I just now brought it inside so I can post without a jinx. I had no coins of Nicephorus B., unless I have a junk box anonymous follis kicking around, so when a sale made the price dip below $200, it was a no-brainer to buy. This coin would be a junk boxer in any other metal, but it's gold, or debased gold at least. I had just finished washing dishes when the mail arrived, so I haven't opened the container to handle the coin. I ordered it from Forum and chose the registered version. Joe warned me that registered was slow, but this was not the case this time. It arrived in about the same time as first class would. I chose the registered version because the coin was already broken and it's scyphate, so I hoped that registered would be sent separately from everything else. And the postage was indeed $22, it wasn't a big markup. Registered must be very expensive for anything other than a letter. I could then customize my delivery date and when I opened it, the coin is in a perfect holder. Not really suitable for display because it's kind of opaque, but just perfect for mailing. The mailer was also ideal. Do you think it's safe to put it in a flip? There was another broken one (sold by the time I bought this) which had more complete figures, but was a vertical break, less pleasing to the eye. If Wikipedia is correct, Nicephorus was pretty elderly by the time of his revolt. My previous forum buy, a nice John II Trikephalon, is easily my second favorite coin buy of the year. Were the break at the top, I wouldn't have bought it. Who wants a beheaded Nicephorus? Anyway, it's a cheap placeholder. I want to also pick up a VF or better Nicephorus portrait follis in the future. Forum description: BZ99106. Electrum histamenon nomisma, DOC III-2 3b, Wroth BMC 7, Morrisson BnF 56/Cp/AV/01, Ratto 2051, SBCV 1881, Sommer 56.3, gVF, scyphate, broken, 1/3 missing, Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) mint, weight 2.812g, maximum diameter 30.23mm, die axis 180o, 1078 - 1081 A.D.; obverse Christ seated facing, throne without back, nimbus cruciger with no pellets in cross, wearing pallium and colobium, raising right hand in benediction, gospels in left hand, IC - XC (Greek abbreviation: Ihsos Xrists - Jesus Christ) flanking head; reverse +NIKHFP ∆EC TW ROTANIAT, Nicephorus standing facing on footstool, bearded, wearing crown and loros, holding labarum with cross on shaft and globus cruciger, all inside double border; from the Robert Wachter Collection; $220.00 SALE PRICE $198.00
  8. Thanks. That's exactly what I thought about the slow/turning part! The brake pressure hadn't been super awesome for a while, it was probably rusty and ready to go. That would have been the car I would have been driving in the storms tomorrow. Fortuna was smiling today. Anyway, many people have much bigger problems than I. I'm sure it will get fixed. Thanks for any well wishes in advance, but I'm ok and things will get fixed. I feel strangely completely at peace about the whole matter. It was just slightly scary in the moment. It happened in the ideal place for it to happen, if there's an ideal. There was another broken one in the vcoins section, which must not have been updated right away. That had a break in a different place. I happened to look, and the just ordered one went on sale. I got about $30 off!
  9. Aha! Hint; it's broken, but the best parts are there. It'll be a placeholder until I can upgrade that emperor. I'd like to find one of his portrait folles in strong VF. I don't need any jinxes after today. Sadly, I'm a bit of a pro at failed brakes. They gave out on my prevous car..twice. I'm not bringing it back to that garage. I'm sending it to a slow but trustworthy one. Things will get fixed.
  10. I don't want to jinx the coin completely, but I ordered a nomisma of Nicephorus Botaniates. It seems to be a jinx when I post a picture before it gets here. I'm a little shaken up; my brakes went out (I'm ok and nothing wrecked) and I just finished walking home. I'll just have to drive the other car until it's fixed.
  11. With no disrepect of any kind intended to people who do collect these fields, these are just my personal likes/dislikes. The little to no interest section: Judean: high in history, but they're small (not a small coin fan) and most don't have portraits, or designs which catch my fancy. Islamic; mostly ditto (except for the small), but there are notable exceptions. I'm actually becoming more interested in these as time goes on. LRBs/Constantinian coins. My interest goes way down after the 310's. However, there are exceptions; AE1/2's, Julian, Magnus Maximus, Eugenius and coins of the 5th century. Coins of Constantine and family with neat obverse designs are also notable exceptions. I can collect the silver (and if I had the budget, the gold). Celtic: I have little or no desire to collect the very abstract ones. Some of the closer to original ones can be very cool, however. Chinese coins (the designs and the load of fakes). Byzantine AE coins of Constans (except for the western mints) and the very late Byzantines. Yes, I do have areas which I like better than others but I'm an omnivore of whatever catches my fancy. While not up to Hellenistic standards, the following portrait of Heraclius isn't bad, and certainly no worse than contemporary states. Apsimar the admiral also isn't too bad. It's good to branch out and try new things. At one time I despised dixieland music. I still despise bad dixieland music, but I've grown to love the genre, especially Eddie Condon, Kid Ory, etc. The Tin Roof Blues, done correctly, is a gorgeous song. People at the time referred to the genre as jazz. I'm currently on a Byzantine kick (and my mom called Byzantine AE 'slag heaps' when I was starting out) but my first love is the Roman series of Sulla to Nero. My favorite Byzantine numismatic periods are 539 to the 710's and 1071 to 1204. That being said, there are exceptions and I could see myself picking up an example from almost any of the 'dislike' categories if something really catches my fancy.
  12. Orichalcum reduced sestertius, RIC V 216, C -, aVF/F, 12.464g, 25.2mm, 180o, Rome mint, [IMP C P LIC GALLI]ENVS AVG, laureate and draped bust right; reverse [IOV]I CONSERVATORI S C, Jupiter standing left, thunderbolt in right, scepter in left. Ex Forum. My best/most interesting ones are mostly unphotographed. I omitted posting low-grade Sestertii. My favorite (affordable) Gallienus types; the heroic bust Antoninianii from the Gallic military mint and the Sestertii.
  13. I also have a mystery bag, from when coins where cheaper in the 90's.
  14. Neat! Quant.Geek's examples are much better than my handful. I'd like to find a very nice example of one of the 'fat face' 40 nummi of Constantinople (too lazy to look up the Sear number). Per the affordable AE, I'm rather partial to the portrait issues of Syracuse.
  15. Cool coin! I'm also interested in that period. My Volusian is a sestertius and a decrepit Viminacium issue.
  16. That's a very nice Alexius Trikephalon, Simon. And it also looks to have more gold than mine. All of my post-1092 gold are examples of John II; a fluke of what was affordable at the time. That's even more interesting that my Trikephalon might have been circulating in Anatolia. Were magnates in Anatolia given their land back after Alexius' reconquest, or did they ever lose it in the first place? My new buy isn't as nice as the John II, although the karat count is probably higher. However, I got it on the cheap and I now have an example of that emperor.
  17. Being an opportunistic buyer I pounced on another coin. Stay tuned, although this one's not as nice. It does fill a hole, though. I previously did not have a coin of said ruler. Was the coin of this thread called a Trikephalon because of the three figures?
  18. Hmm, reading interesting overstrike...so the smaller modules of each were c. 1120 restrikes?
  19. The obverse on Hrefn's example seems to correspond more exactly to the CCS line drawing than mine, while the garb depecited by FitzNigel's coin seems to be more like mine. Are these variants noted in the references? And using simple logic, if the first type has both a large and small module, as well as the portrait type, wouldn't this indicate a full follis (or whatever it was called) and a half unit? Although it would have been rather confusing for the public to discern the difference. Neat, Seth; I'll have to check it out! https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/london_ancient_coins/89/product/crusaders_antioch_tancred_regent_110103_110412__follis/1495624/Default.aspx That's the coin that I decided against in favor of mine. I think mine is nicer overall, and was $60-80 cheaper! Except for the blob in the part of his hair, I think the more expensive one also suggests hair, not a turban.
  20. Thanks! Ah, I saw the other types on vcoins, also common. Unless my coin is tooled it does show what seems to be hair, not a turban. The clothing on mine also looks a bit different than the illustration.
