They're easy and fun to make! I did a how to on another forum.

I saw that post on CT! Wow your cabinet is awesome, personally it’s my favourite of all these storage methods in this thread and it’s wonderful that you made it yourself 😄

I move my coins around a lot, storage wise, but currently, I have most of my better coins (about 300-350 ish) in my Zecchi coin cabinet, and my two Abafil cases.

I store another 150 ish in Saflips, which I keep in rectangular boxes, and I have a few hundred very low end ancients, mostly lrbs, that I keep in bags and boxes

I store the core of my Roman imperial collection+coins i'm actively trying to sell (trays 8&9) in my cabinet, my better/more interesting ants in my Miidiplomat, and my better/more interesting Greeks&miscellanious ancients in my minibring

I do have a large amount of ancient and medieval Chinese cash coins (nothing rare/valuable) that I store in a box
    IMG_6537.jpgIMG_6536.jpg

For the rest of my collection I store mostly in saflips

Wow! Never knew you had so many coins - great to see all of them. Looks super nice in those trays too!

I simply have too many coins for trays. I keep them in Saflips, pocket pages, and three-ring binders.

I’m beginning to find this too as I buy group lots and stuff - but sadly SAflips are much more expensive in the UK than the US unless you buy lots of them to make up for shipping costs.

One of my favorites from the period.

1792 "five sols" coin (?) or token minted by private company Freres Monneron using a steam mill. Entrepreneurial brothers exploited a loophole in French laws which briefly allowed private interests to mint coinage.

The Monnerons made these tokens in huge numbers and they were actually widely used as tender because of combination of coinage shortage, obvious artistic quality and political considerations (the king's effigy is notably tiny which made it more desirable in then-current political climate). The loophole was quickly fixed by the French legislature which forced the Monneron tokens out of circulation. Not that it changed much because the Monnerons were already out of business by then.

Really nice! I have a 1791 Monneron Freres token, but it's nowhere near as nice as yours 🙂

  7. Hi all! So, I know there's a thread for posting your latest coin purchases, but how about one for coin books? Here you can post when you get a new coin book you like 🙂

    I'll start off.

Firstly, I got this super nice big book (in French) about carved gems and Roman Republican coins featuring all sorts of animals. It has some wonderful close-ups and lots of info (plus I like to collect animal coins) so probably my favourite addition to my numismatic library so far.

The second one is a reprint of an old catalogue from the late 19th Century. I got it as a gift from a family member because they know I collect ancients. It's not really related to what I collect or anything, and is just descriptions, but it's still cool!

So yeah, share your most recent coin books you've bought 😄

Oooh lovely! Maybe one day if I have the chance to get some really nice tetradrachms - I might get some of these. They look sooooo nice, and I imagine they're super well made.

Trays for me too! I've posted plenty of photos of them over on CT. None of those fancy Abafil trays! I use Lindner and Lighthouse (= Leuchtturm), which come in transparent plastic sleeves that are interchangeably stackable, so one can mix trays from the two companies. So you can have a giant stack of trays like this one, in a relatively small amount of space at the bottom of a closet:

    image.thumb.jpeg.e1fe43d8656807aa16e13839a623fb7f.jpeg

And then there are the trays I keep out on display where I can see them:

    image.thumb.jpeg.9088a7937f3da0731149a77de4b049b1.jpeg

That's a big stack of trays for sure! I love that feature of them - and for my collection they're good enough quality.

Hey, I am John. Saw this is a new “alternative” to cointalk, and since I have been trying to join there forever but never could, well they can just suck it then!

Anyway, Id like to share a new pickup…I picked up an upgrade to my only coin of Claudius, which is a bronze as. The upgrade is a Claudius denarius!

Claudius in denarii is tough to get, alongside Caligula… so I was pretty stoked when I somehow managed to get a dealer selling this coin to discount about 40% of his ask! (Sometimes its just worth to ask for a discount lol)

Anyhow, here is some info on the coin:

    Roman Imperial:

    Claudius (r.41-54)

    AR denarius, 17mm, 3.35g

    struck 46-47, Rome mint.

    RIC I 41

Obv:TI CLAVD CAESAR AVG P M TR P VI IMP XI, laureate head of Claudius right.

Rev: SPQR PP OB CS, legend in three lines surrounded by oak wreath.

About the coin itself, it is not perfect but it is still in pretty nice shape overall! Well struck and centered, decent grade, good weight and solid silver (a lot of Claudius denarii from this era tend to be fourrees as they were made in high numbers in Britain during Claudius’ invasion, so keep that in mind. They tend to be too underweight compared to genuine silver examples, often under 3g, sometimes a bit over. You can also see base metal exposure often too. ) The main issue with this coin is it has some pitting and a flan flaw on the obv but besides that it is pretty nice!

For those wondering what the SPQR PP OBCS thing means; it stands for Senatus Populus Que Romanus Pater Patriae Ob Civis Servatos, meaning: From the senate and the roman people to the father of the nation, savior of the people. It is apparently thanking him for saving the lives of roman citizens, similarly to how Augustus was given the same thanks years before. This is because after Caligula’s assasination, the Roman Empire could have been embroiled in internal conflict figuring out what to do next, who should have been the next princeps, even what form of government should replace the princeps, etc. that is until the praetorians presented Claudius as their guy.

Claudius had some physical disabilities and was never taken seriously by his family, hence why he survived the various persecutions of both Tiberius and Caligula. Nobody ever figured he would take the imperial purple for himself, so he was never seen as a threat. When the Praetorians were looking for a replacement for Caligula, they saw Claudius as the perfect man since they figured they could make him their puppet. However Claudius turned out to be much more competent than people imagined, he did a lot during his time as emperor participating in court cases and making various decrees often and even successfully invaded Britannia, something Caesar 100 years before did not even succcessfully do! Overall I have great respect for Claudius as he is like an underdog who everyone grossly underestimated due to his disabilities, but turned out to be pretty competent, arguably just behind Augustus himself!

Do you have any denarii of Claudius, or any julio claudians for that matter?

    Cheers!

  14. So, I know there were a lot of threads like this back on CT. But I couldn't find any here yet and I thought it would be fun to start one as it might be fun.

I'm a real tray guy - I love 'em. You can easily see coins, and it's super easy to handle them (that's the best bit of the hobby imo - especially ancients 😄) For my favourite modern coins, they go in cheap trays, and my ancients (plus medieval + gold) have some nicer stackable Lighthouse ones (plan to get more of these in the future). A lot of my 'bulk' coins like old pennies will just go in boxes, though.

How do YOU store your coins? Also, feel free to ask questions about storing coins and related stuff here - let's make this a great thread for beginners too if they're looking for ideas! Look forward to seeing how you all take care of them! 🙂

    This is something distinctively WW1-related.

A 10-pfennig 1917 coin of "Kingdom of Poland" a German puppet state formed in latest 1916 after Germany and Austria-Hungary occupied the entirety of former Congress Poland. The state was intended as a source of manpower and part of the so-called "Mittle Europa" - a project of small Germany-aligned puppet states in Central and Eastern Europe. The state wasn't success to say the least. It was difficult to find Poles willing to cooperate for various reasons ranging from doubts in German victory, outrage at plunder by the occupying forces and up to obvious favoritism given to Lithuanians and Ukrainians regarding competing territorial claims.

The coin in question reflects the reality of the era. It's denomination in pfennig (substraction of "Polish mark") was alien to Polish tradition and betrays the foreign origin. It was minted in massive, inflationary quantities making even well preserved specimens affordable today. At the same time it was made from cheap base metals, which causes the coin to rust! I'm not kidding. My first specimen literally rusted after it spent brief time in damp air.

On the other hand, the coin stands out as part of the very first distinctively Polish coinage since mid 19th century, when Russia clamped down on the last remnants of Congress Poland's autonomy.

That is very interesting! If I happen to write another little article about WW1 coins, it might be fun for me to take a look at these coins.

Super fun coins! Love your fractional sigloi.
I think mine is the same diameter and shape as a regular siglos, just that it's super porous. I'm still not completely sure how it happens to that extent, but I've been told it's probably just something to do with a lower silver purity and the production of them?

Yours are fun too - and I love your barbarous imitation. I quite like barbarous LRBs (because they can be so affordable) and so have a few of them, think I have the other Roma commem type but I'll check if I've got this one.
