You already saw mine (it's my most prized ancient). The portrait is nice but he looks too friendly I've read he was decently popular in his first 6 months and in the provinces. Maybe somewhere along the road I'll pick up another Nero (who looks a little more evil and or fat) 

Ethiopian coin appreciation 

I don't take it personally when I'm told I bought a bad coin (tooled Trajan), making mistakes (hopefully small ones) is all part of the hobby. I will probably work on collecting provincial coins for the Julio Claudian dynasty and buy decent coins not slugs. I think for now I will exclude Galba, Oho, and Vitellius.  I think the Nero was a good purchase but for the rest of this year I think I'll save up for a Caligula. As a 25 year old math teacher the prices are daunting and I'm worried prices will get even higher but if I play my cards right I will find coins that I like without jeopardizing my future.

I really like this Medieval Hungarian Dinar it depicts Madonna and Child. I believe it's from the 1490s. Never really was able to attribute it even with a book because so many of them look similar. It's a very cool common medieval coin but it has a great design.

@Nerosmyfavorite68 I am considering canceling my order because I found a rough looking but cheap 45 BC Julius Caesar AE Dupondius do you think I should go for that instead (no portrait unfortunately) or stay patient for more opportunities because Julius Caesar coins tend to sell really fast and for big money. Patience is important in the hobby and I don't want to overspend. I'm celebrating because I recently got a new job so I kind of want to make excuses to treat myself haha

Eh I'm still happy knowing its most likely not a fake. Even though it is tooled it is still pretty cool and I'm happy with it. Probably worth more than $5 so its a win anyways!

I bought this for $5 dollars at a flea market. Stupid yes but I decided to take the risk. I believe it is a Sestertius, it's about the size of a us half dollar. Is it a fake? 

Well that's kinda disappointing for me. It was mislabeled on vcoins. Hopefully when it comes maybe someone here would be willing to trade with me for a decent Caligula...

Today I was quite lucky and snagged myself a nice Caligula Lydia provincial coin for 50 euros on vcoins. It is in pretty decent shape and the horse on the back reminds me of when Caligula tried to make his horse a consul in the senate. I'm starting to like the provincial coins a little more than the Roman Imperial ones. Not just because of price even but I think the designs are more interesting. So happy to finally get Caligula, I might want to cut out the 3 emperors who had little impact on history from my collection to save money. Also, do you think this coin is worth cleaning? 

Wanted to post an update that I finally bought a Nero coin from David Connors on Vcoins today. It's a provincial coin and it has a nice looking bust of Nero. I think it looks better than his fat neck looking ones. Was thinking of the Roman Egypt ones as well but the irony of the goddess of goodness and justice on the reverse of this one takes the cake for me haha

I bought this from a coin dealer for $3 and I think its a Constans coin. Hoping to get help for a full id so I could look it up by reference number. Thanks for your help!

It's pretty cool and the barbarian war scene is really common with Constantius II coins. It speaks of the time period of his reign when Romans were fending off the Germanic tribes

Joaquin Phoenix did a good job playing as Commodus in the Gladiator film even though he is clean shaven and lacks a resemblance lol

Well my aim is just a portrait of each of the emperors. I'm hoping to snag a cheap one say $100-200 or less per emperor. I realize it is a difficult task and I'm not a big spender so I will focus on Nero for now because well he's Nero haha. I'm okay with provincial coins and I'm not looking for high grade stuff maybe just in good/vg. I'm probably out of my ballpark so I might just focus on Augustus, Nero, Claudius, and the Flavian dynasty. Yeah I'm not rich haha

Hi my name is Alan and I'm pretty new to ancients. I'm on a relatively small budget but around how much would be a good ball park for each of the first 12 emperors money wise to aim for. I started looking on Vcoins for prices and some are reasonable but I'm not sure its worth the price or to sit on it. From what I see Caligula is the scarcest and hardest one to get of these 12.  Would happily take insight on price ranges for those types of coins. Thanks for the help!
