  1. I have three of these that I found metal detecting back when I was finding Roman coins about 30 years ago. I have never been able to figure out what they are for sure. Have seen a few for sale but does not seem that the ones selling them know for sure what they might be either. Anyone able to help me out on what these might be ?
  2. I have a Theodosius that I am a little stumped on the mint mark. Can anyone let me know the mint for it please it does not seem to be very common with this mint mark as I tried a few places. Thank you all for looking.
  3. I would like to be a part of this awesome Secret Saturnalia again this year. I agree with Ryro and Curtisimo if you do not know the member do some homework and search their threads they have posted, this will at least show you put some thought into your present. I also agree with Nerosmyfavorite about some of the gifts got tossed in a basket I had a few like that. Because of that I always try very hard to make sure my giftee is not going to toss their gift into a basket. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to once again be a part of this awesome, generous and special Secret Saturnalia event!
  4. These as I understand were minted in central Italy and are Roman not Greek, they were circulated all over Spain so this one that was found in Spain gives it a good chance of having an Iberian inscription being added to it in ancient times in Spain. It might not be an Iberian inscription but sure does look like one. Also to note it is almost unheard of to find any Greek coinage in Spain.
  5. Beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it ! Let me know if you decide to sell it please !
  6. I just purchased this Aes formatum and am super excited to be able to see it in hand. I have some different types of proto money, this one reminded me of the chunky monkey one that @Ryro had posted about before and I knew right then I wanted one. This one weighs in at 52.72 grams so it is not quite as big as Ryro's example, but having the letters on it gave it some extra cool factor. I think the letters might be Iberian and possibly added to it in ancient times after it made its way to Spain, cant wait to hold it !!! Roman Republic Aes Formatum Proto Money. Precurser to the Aes Grave Central Italy 6th-4th century B.C. 52.72 grams
  7. Here are the ones I had found along with some other stuff that I had set in a junk box. Lets see who can figure out what some of this is !
  8. I already have a few of these Roman lead sling bullets that I had found metal detecting when I was in Europe but this one I could not pass up for 17 euro shipped and just got it today.

    MD day..

Nice sling bullet Galba ! When I was in Spain I found some of these. A fellow metal detector friend had seen mine one time and asked me about them, He then said oh that is what those little lead footballs are I always throw them away.
  10. Hello Prieure de Sion and thank you for your help! None of the ones in the link you posted have the monogram in front of the galley like mine.
  11. I seem to be picking up a few more Roman Republic coins lately and staying away from the Imperial coins. I bought this just because I liked the way it looked and for no other reason, I would like to attribute it and put it into my collection display tray so I am needing the help from this awesome forum. I believe this is a Sextans and I am having a hard time with the monogram in front of the galley prow on the reverse. The most common monogram I have found so far is the MA that belongs to the praetor P. Manlius Vulso but it does not really look like the MA I am seeing on the coins I have seen. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  12. @Ryro You hold a special spot on the friendships I have created in the ancient coin collecting friends I have met over the years! Thank you so much for your appreciation post ! I know nothing at all about your area of collecting so I will not participate in your generous give away. This kind of reminds me of the movie toy story
  13. This is a real issue of the same coin that I sold last year what a difference!
  14. I just received this one in the mail today. I usually do not bother with the Roman barbaric issues of coins but something about this one just stood out and grabbed my attention so I bought it. I am intrigued with this Emperor's story. He was one of the very few that survived the killing (purging) of Constantine's many family and the civil wars of Constantius II time frame. He was a very different Emperor that did some very unusual things for being so well educated. He converted from Christianity to Paganism, gave up luxury, slept on the ground, went unclean, was infested with vermin, let His nails grow long and boasted of His shaggy hair and dirty hands. If you ask me I think He was a little Crazy ! So what better song best fits Him ? And Ozzy looks a little Pagan in this video.
  15. Looks very familiar to me.

  19. AE semis Asido (Medina Sidonia) Spain 1st century BCObverse, facing head of Melkart / HerculesReverse, Two Tuna fish with punic legend Asido Lying within the ancient Roman province of Turdetania some 30km inland from the Southern Spanish coast, this site lay upon a hill c35km to the east of Gades (modern Cadiz), and 15km to the west of the Besilus river. Modern Medina-Sidonia. This particular coin is very special to me in many ways, with a little more history than some of my others.I was stationed at the Naval Base Rota Spain in 1987 about 35 years ago. I would go metal detecting with a Friend of mine named Ferrel almost every Sunday. One day we decided to look for some new places and drove around for hours looking, Ferrel knew how to look for possible sites and taught me a lot.We tried a lot of spots but found nothing. At our last spot for the day I found this coin in a farm field close to modern day Medina Sidonia. One of my Spanish Friends Juan Antonio (a Roman coin collector and Seller) had always expressed an interest in this coin, and before I left Spain in 1991 I traded it to Him.I thought about my Friend Juan Antonio for years afterwards wondering what had happened to my Friend. Then in 2013 I happened upon an E-bay seller with Roman coins from Spain, He was in a town close by to my Friend so I sent Him a message through E-bay asking Him (in my bad Spanish writing ability) if He might possibly know my Friend.I waited anxiously and within a day or so the seller responded and said He knew Juan Antonio.I made contact with Juan Antonio and friended Him on Facebook and even called Him on the phone. In one of our conversations I asked about the coin I traded to Him, He told me He still had it and that many coin collectors had tried to buy it from Him or trade for it but always kept it because of the friendship we had.Not long after, I sent Juan Antonio some Spanish coins I had lost interest in. And within a few weeks I received a package from Him. In it was the Asido semis coin. He told me He knew what it meant to me and wanted me to have it back. So about 23 years later I had my coin back in my collection.I have done a few searches for this particular type of coin and it seems pretty rare. I have purchased another one pictured below and now have two of them in my collection.
  20. I had one just like it that I had found metal detecting when I lived in Spain but I have no idea what happened to it, Ryro has a lead one like this as well.
  21. Hello everyone this is my very first post here on Numis Forum's. I used to be pretty frequent on another Forum that a lot of people here were on. Anyway I really like the Iberian type coins and some of the early Roman Proto money such as AES Rude and the AES formatum. I just got these in the mail today and one of these I think is not a proto money but the tip of a Visigoth belt buckle that is broken. The rings I am not so sure about either but I am pretty sure that the curved piece is an AES formatum ,the big piece is an AES rude, and the other long ingot piece of bronze is an AES formatum. Let me know what you all think and show us your AES type proto money please.
