  1. I have a better centered example of this reverse, which was produced with three obverse types: Elagabalus, Julia Soaemis and Julia Maesa. Mine is Maesa:
  2. Nice coin @Johnnie B! I just received my own Caesarea Maritima coin from Naville. Love FedEx, the coin was picked up at 4 pm in London and 8 am next day it was already on their delivery truck! Auction house description: Samaria, Caesarea Maritima Marcus Aurelius, 161-180 Bronze circa 161-180, Æ 19.80 mm., 4.96 g. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust r. Rev. nude Apollo standing, facing, head, l., holding laurel-branch and bow(?), resting on tripod entwined by serpent. RPC Temp. 6320. Extremely rare, only two specimens listed in RPC and the only one in private hands, light brown tone and Good Very Fine. From a private British collection. Apparently the only specimen in private hands. While there are several additional specimens known, including at least two more in private hands it is still the best of them, in my opinion.
  3. No , the journal is German so they translate the abstracts;). The paper is in English.
  4. @Al Kowsky Thank you, I enjoy these little puzzles. I submit corrections to RPC quite often, and even published a paper on reattribution of several coins: https://www.uni-muenster.de/Ejournals/index.php/ozean/article/view/3016
  5. Here is a double die match, though the reverse die was in better shape when your coin was struck. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/pavlos_s_pavlou_numismatist/131/product/palestinegazaantoninus_pius_ad_138161ae265mmstruck_ad_1512turreted_bust_of_thycheunrecorded_date_for_issue/223287/Default.aspx There are some additional coins with the same obverse die in several public and private collections, for example Sofaer 91.
  6. Sure, here it is, page 121: https://issuu.com/cngcoins/docs/cng_xxvii Also, Abramowitz typically marked his purchase price on his stickers, does this coin have it? CNG estimate was $800 thirty years ago 😉.
  7. Very nice coin, congratulations! One correction though, it is actually BIC, not EIC, so year 212. Matches both obverse and reverse dies of coins clearly dated BIC. Also, your coin previously sold on CNG auction, back in 1993. CNG Printed Auction XXVII (29.09.1993), lot 1346.
  8. I have coauthored a paper in one of very few journals dedicated to ancient numismatics, OZeAN. The paper describes several new Nabataean drachms, closing some gaps in over a century long coinage of dated silver drachms. The most important finding, I think, is a confirmation of existence of Rabbel II drachm dated reginal year 31, nine years later than what was considered the last year of production of silver coins in Nabataea.https://www.uni-muenster.de/Ejournals/index.php/ozean/article/view/4673
  9. I don't think with LAC in particular it's a technical issue. I wrote to them on at least two occasions, years and months ago, and didn't get any response. Most other sellers VCoins dealers respond promptly.
  10. Let me add very common Judaea Capta of Titus and much scarcer Vespasian, both from the mint of Caesarea Maritima.
  11. I was also very surprised it hammered so low, way below what it sold for two years ago. I bid a minimum bid on it, just to trace it actually since I already have one in similar condition. Luckily for me you bid on it last minute, or I would be ending up with a duplicate.
  12. I was browsing RPC today and was pleasantly surprised to see that they listed one of my recent purchases as a separate type: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/6/30515 When I saw this coin at the auction, listed as unidentified, I was hoping nobody will spot it. It is a very rare (though not unique, I know at least 3 more specimens) coin of Caesarea Maritima struck under Severus Alexander. In general there are many hundreds, if not thousands Caesarea coins of Severus Alexander known, but almost all of them show eagle spreading wings and holding wreath with SPQR. All other reverse types are very to extremely rare, I have no idea why. Luckily nobody else paid attention to this coin and got it for about $25 shipped, pretty much free. Makes it bargain of the year for me 😉. I was bidding on another unique and misattributed provincial coin at the same auction, and the hummer was 3 times my 420 euro maximum, no such luck twice.
  13. I am glad fakes of Provincial coins are less common and the coins are more unique so one doesn't need to keep thousands examples in memory to spot suspicious doubles.
  14. I used to trust him for coins until recently when he listed a 'hoard' of procurators and Jewish war prutot that looked a bit off. I looked at the dies and found way too many die connections within the group to be a genuine hoard. I later confirmed my suspicions with a very reputable expert in the field who also said it is not the first case, by far. The prutot are in great condition and priced very high for the types. Many are sadly already sold....
  15. He says he will continue listing them on Ebay.
  16. For several years I had zero delivery issues, until just few weeks ago when 3 coins went missing. Mind you, on 3 different occasions, and in all 3 cases I can't blame the post. One is from very reputable European Vcoins dealer. He sent the coin, and few days later notified me that I might be getting an order of another person instead of mine. I said no problem, the moment I receive it I will send it to that person, expecting they do the same. Actually never received mine or his order. I used the cheap not tracked (bayer's risk) option since the coin was just $40, so I didn't feel comfortable asking for refund. More important is the loss of the coin, which is not particularly beautiful but rather rare with less than 10 known specimens. Two other missing coins were from Ebay, both from the same dealer from whom I purchased many coins over two years with no issues. One of the packages I received from him had one coin less. I let him know and he immediately apologized and said he located the coin and will include it with the next shipping. Will, it did not arrive in the next or following shipping (yes, his offering is overlapping very well with my collecting interests so I purchase coins from him quite often) despite his promises. I didn't make much fuss about it, the coin is cheap and not particularly rare. But just last week it happened again, in order of just two coins only one was included but also the package included a 'certificate of authenticity' of the missing coin so it is not like he forgot about it. This time it was much more important and valuable coin and I immediately contacted him. He apologized and again said he located it and will send it with next shipping. I am waiting now, but if it will not be included again I don't think I will be able to take any action with Ebay since the package is marked as delivered.
