  1. One more kinda interesting Constantius II Ae type from Antioch: Obv: (Anepigraphic); Laureate and cuirassed bust left Rev: CONSTAN / TIVS / CAESAR / SMANTA in four lines, star above Ref: RIC 55
  2. I've got a single, not so great, example but the two captives show nicely.
  3. A bit more interesting FEL TEMP Ae Centenionalis type from Alexandria: Obv: D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG; Diademed bust left holding globe Rev: FEL TEMP REPARATIO; Emperor standing left holding labarum and resting hand on grounded shield, two bound captive before: ALEA in exergue Ref: RIC 54
  4. Here's one of my favorite Constantius II "spearing fallen soldier" Ae type from the Rome mint (25mm, 5.3gms): Obv: D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG; Laureate and cuirassed bust right holding globe Rev: GLORIA ROMANORVM: Emperor in military dress, with shield on left arm, galloping right and spearing kneeling barbarian; shield and broken spear below horse; star above, R T in exergue
  5. From my experience there are a whole lot of little Valentinian III ae coins out there. Problem is that they are poorly struck or very worn or struck a lot off-center. In any case finding nicer and identifiable Val III types is tough to do. Here's a few of mine: 1. Obv: D N VALENTINIANO P F AVG; Cuirassed bust right Rev: Cross within wreath; SMKA in exergue 2. Obv: D N VALEN AVG; Cuirassed bust right Rev: CAS - TRA; Camp-Gate, star above 3. Obv: D N VALENTINIANO AVG (or similar); Cuirassed bust right Rev: VICTORIA AVGG; Two Victories standing facing and jointly holding a wreath, P above; RM in exergue
  6. I was just looking at your camp-gates and I'm almost positive that this Licinius gate is the very rare closed-door variety. You can kind of see the dots where the door is and the obverse (helmeted bust) and the reverse (VIRTV - S AVGG with P - R to either side and RS in exergue) design is definitely that coin.
  7. Since I'm updating pics of my camp-gates I'd like to share this one: Constantine I 'the Great' (307-337 AD) Ae Follis : Rome mint. Struck 318-9 AD Obv: CONSTANTINVS AVG; Helmeted and cuirassed bust right Rev: VIRTVS AVGG; Camp-gate with closed doors and three turrets, P-R across fields; R S in exergue Ref: RIC 176
  8. I really like the Constantine and later camp-gates and just updated some pics of a couple of my faves. I was just going to post them on a camp-gate thread but apparently there hasn't been one ... until now. Here's a couple twin types that I bought around 20 years ago always thinking that I would upgrade them at some point. Unfortunately have not come across another since then. Here they are: Valentinian II and Theodosius I, Thessalonica mint: Obv's: D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG or D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG; Pearl-diademed and mantled bust left holding mappa and short scepter Rev: GLORIA REIPVBLICE: Camp-gate with christogram above, A to left; TES in exergue Hopefully you will show off some of your more interesting camp-gate types.
  9. I have both the Dumbarton Oaks and Sear Byzantine (the 2006 version) books. Both are fine but I would recommend the Sear book for a new collector ... you just need to completely ignore the "value" part as the numbers can be way off.
  10. Thanks! That's it. I've been into ancients for over 25 years and had never seen this type before. Of course, there's probably a whole lot more that I've never seen. That's what makes it interesting.
  11. Been trying to identify this Greek Ae for too long and I'm ready to give up. Just can't find anything close to it. Hoping someone can help me out. Here it is: Obv; Standing figure (maybe Dacia) holding staff surmounted by head of ass; A PEYC or similar to right Rev: Seated figure (probably Apollo) with right hand raised; IVC - KA IOC (?) around Size: 19.6mm, 4.4gms
  12. The pentagram type you show has the lettering Π-I-Σ-O-Σ which is certainly scarcer than the issue with Π–I–T–A–N
  13. Had never seen a provincial from Pitane. An interesting piece. Here's my typical little Pitane type with the pentagram: Pitane Mysia Ae; 4th-3rd Century BC Ox: Bust of Zeus Ammon right Rx: Pentagram; π–I–T–A–N around Size : 10mm, 1.1gms
  14. Jovinus (411-413 AD) AR Siliqua (14.7mm, 1.2gms); Lugdunum mint Obv: D N IOVINVS P F AVG; Diademed and cuirassed bust right Rev: VICTORIA AVGG; Roma seated left on curule chair holding Victory on globe and reversed spear, SMLDV in exergue Ref: RIC X 1717
  15. My big-eyed Constantine III (407-411 AD) AR Siliqua Obv: D N CONSTANTINVS P F AVG; Draped bust right Rev: VICTORIA AAVGGG; Roma seated left holding Victory on globe and spear; SMAR in exergue Size: 15.4mm, 1.8gms
  16. I'd like to share one more very interesting variant from my collection. This one's an Anastasius ae nummus type: Obviously a monogram of Anastasius ... but with a cross added in the left field.
  17. Beautiful coin Valentinian. Never have seen that one ... and it's now on my want list. I do have a very unusual Byzantine follis of Justin I that I put away many years ago. The most logical explanation I have heard is that it was a limited issue for some special occasion. Obv: D N IVSTI(...); Bust right Rev: Large M between two branches, cross above, B below; NIKM in exergue
  18. I suspect this is your coin. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?term=geta+thanatos&category=1-2&lot=&thesaurus=1&images=1&en=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1&currency=usd&order=0 Second one down.
  19. It's a provincial of Geta and the reverse shows Thanatos.
  20. Here's my larger AR Miliarense of Valentinian I: Obv: D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG; Draped bust right Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM; Victory standing right and inscribing shield resting on cippus; R P (Rome mint) in exergue Size: 21mm, 3.3gms An interesting upwards gaze.
