Unidentified Arabic square silver coins

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi everybody,

When cleaning my garage I found these two silver square arabic coins. After some research on the internet I guess they are both square dirham silver almohade.

Each coin is 1.4 x 1.4 cm and has a weight of about 1.5 g.

I do not believe they have some value, but I am a full crap in this area. May be they are not correctly oriented, sorry about that.

Any expert opinion will be appreciated.

Best,

Didier

Compare to this one:

MAOrient-AlmohadenSpanienviereckigerDirham.png.ceadea84ff35a5ff172df015ea55919e.png

Almohad Caliphate in Spain and Northern Africa, anonymous, AR square dirham, c. 1163–1269 AD (558–668 AH), without mint name. Obv: “No God except Allah / It's all for God / No power except God”. Rev: “God is our Lord / Mohammed is our messenger / The Mahdi is before us”. 14mm, 1.40g. Ref: Album 496.

Here is the relevant section from Album's Checklist:

Nailed with another mallet, @Ursus!  More anecdotally (than not), there are also imitations from contemporary Castile-Leon.  (An echo of the Frankish imitations of Ayyubid dirhams, probably Acre, c. 2nd-quarter to mid-13th c. CE.)

MEC vol. 6 ("Iberian Peninsula") is less than adequate for any of the al-Andalusian issues.  ...The interpretive chapter, barely ten pages, is titled "The Muslim Element".  Coverage of the Almohads is especially minimal, although they at least acknowledge the general type.  Good news: you're missing Nothing there!

Hi again Ursus, JeandAcre and Kali,

I guess my second coin, almost erased has no value.

What's about the first one? Is it a rare one? (see attached pictures).

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Best,

Didier
