He had a birthmark on his tight in the form of an anchor, not sure how true this is but that's one explanation I have read.

Wonders (and myths) never cease. Here are several explanations that I found: 
1. Apollo gave Seleucus a ring with an anchor engraved on it.
2. Seleucus tripped over an anchor while walking through a desert with Alexander III.
