The_Collector Posted August 11, 2023 · Member Posted August 11, 2023 (edited) So I recently acquired this coin and it came in the mail today. For the life of me, I cannot find one with a similar reverse. I have searched coin Coinarchive, wildwinds, acsearch, and the collection of @David Atherton The reverse seems to be pax and it looks like she is burning some shields. I have found examples of those coins, but they always have the SC at her side while in this example, though hard to see, the SC is small and at the bottom. The closest I have been able to match it to is this coin : https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=257700 but mine has no trace of words on the reverse of my coin. Please help me figure out what is going on with this coin. Thank you! Also please share your Flavian bronzes. Edited August 11, 2023 by The_Collector 8 Quote
ambr0zie Posted August 11, 2023 · Member Posted August 11, 2023 Your coin should be RIC 276, but wait for David Atherton's opinion about authenticity. 1 Quote
friedberg Posted August 11, 2023 · Member Posted August 11, 2023 In my opinion: RIC II 1² Domitian 284 (R) https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b10447926b http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.2_1(2).dom.284 2 Quote
John Conduitt Posted August 11, 2023 · Supporter Posted August 11, 2023 (edited) RIC 284 is very specifically 'S C in field'. There isn't an 'in exergue'. But then for 284 they reference this coin (where 254 is now 284) as well as this coin (the BM one is the plate). So they knew of the 'in exergue' variation but didn't mention it. I'm currently away from home and my books, I'll look it up when I return Sunday. But you are correct, I'm missing this variety! 2 Quote
The_Collector Posted August 12, 2023 · Member Author Posted August 12, 2023 Thank you all for your help in solving this mystery with me haha!! Thank you @David Atherton I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the coin! Also, I was wondering if you could tell me what books you would recommend since I am trying to specialize in Flavian coinage. I already have the Sear's book and want to know what would be the next step book wise? Thank you! 1 Quote
friedberg Posted August 12, 2023 · Member Posted August 12, 2023 The reference literature for the Flavian coinage is: Roman Imperial Coinage Volume II - Part I https://www.amazon.com/dp/1902040848/ref=olp-opf-redir?aod=1&ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1691873214&sr=8-1 With freendly greetings from Germany 1 Quote
David Atherton Posted August 13, 2023 · Member Posted August 13, 2023 Your variant Pax reverse with S C in exergue is not in RIC or the RIC Addenda & Corrigenda. I would catalogue it as - RIC 284 var. (S C in exergue). As far as books are concerned, RIC II.1 for imperial coinage and RPC II for provincials. They are both fundamental works. 1 Quote
