velarfricative Posted October 1, 2022 · Member Share Posted October 1, 2022 (edited) I don't think we have an Indo-Parthian thread, perfect time to start one. I'll show off the 3 main types you're likely to encounter: The Bust/Nike type, with a generally well-executed bust on the obverse. This one is an issue of Pakores, fairly common but usually low grade Coins with the same style as Indo-Scythian coinage; these always feature the "Gondopharid" tamgha, with a horse rider facing right or left, and one of several deities on the reverse. This is an issue of Abdagases, with a slightly debased obverse legend. And Bust/Athena issues, continuing the same style as the Indo-Greeks. This is an issue of Gondophares; many kings issued these coins, but they're generally very poorly struck and barely legible so it's often difficult to attribute them. There are also silver issues, but they're much more expensive and I haven't gotten one yet. Anyone else have any good Indo-Parthian? Post 'em here. velarfricative Posted August 22, 2023 · Member Author Share Posted August 22, 2023 In the year or so since this post, I actually have managed to get some silver. A drachm (2.80g) of Pakores, and a much smaller drachm (1.57g) of Sases, citing "Aspabharata" on the reverse. 13
Nano Posted September 25 · Member Share Posted September 25 Hi, just wondering what does Aspabharata means? thanks
ACCLA-Mike Posted September 26 · Member Share Posted September 26 Aspabharata is the ruler's name in Kharoshthi on the coin. One of the final Indo-Parthian rulers. After today's CNG auction, his coins are evidently fetching a pretty penny... https://auctions.cngcoins.com/lots/view/4-EMBIOH/indo-parthians-gondopharid-dynasty-aspabharata-circa-1st-century-ad-ar-drachm-117mm-206-g-12h-gondophares-sases-type-sind-mint-vf

velarfricative Posted October 3 · Member Author Share Posted October 3 Yes, it's a name; these small sindh drachms are almost always poorly preserved and there are several names known only from this mint.
velarfricative Posted October 3 · Member Author Share Posted October 3 Another silver issue, a drachm from Sases. Most indo-parthian kings issued this type, but none of them are common.
