  1. Another "keeper" would be this 1907 Five Dollar United States Note often referred to as a Woodchopper.

I have too much into paper and would prefer to just keep one nice example for each type note. You know, gold & silver certificates, FRN, US Note, fractional etc.

  2. Ooooo a topic I can participate in!

National Currency Five Dollars Bloomsburg PA

I live near this town. Well close enough to get to the anual Bloomsburg Fair or fish for catfish behind the fairgrounds which I have done many times. Since the Fair started in 1854, this note could have got some of it's wear there after being printed in the February 1883. Five bucks would have provided entertainment for the family quite well back in those days I would imagine. I have no idea what this is worth, but being somewhat local, I will probably take it to the upcoming coin show and sell it. It should fetch a good buck, maybe enough to go to the fair?

  3. I think this difficult to find so-called dollar should interest some.

1906 TYPE 1 SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE

    So-called Dollar. HK-341

    IMAGE_OBV_555106.jpg.e67e88df264c52eac3dded55c3ddf0c2.jpgIMAGE_REV_555106.jpg.ceb677a2e3e3102fa920e14bb99e7bd3.jpg

At 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906, the coast of Northern California was struck by a major earthquake. The 1906 earthquake preceded the development of the Richter magnitude scale by three decades. The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the quake is 7.9 Devastating fires soon broke out in the city and lasted for several days. Within three days, over 30 fires, caused by ruptured gas mains, destroyed approximately 25,000 buildings on 490 city blocks. More than 3,000 people probably died, including ignored fatalities in Chinatown and surrounding areas of the city. Over 80% of the city of San Francisco was destroyed. Between 227,000 and 300,000 people were left homeless out of a population of about 410,000. Property losses from the disaster have been estimated to be more than $400 Million in 1906 dollars. That would be about 5 and 1/4 Billion today.

Quite dark and a bit gloomy in appearance, but no real sign of wear that I can see. Kind of fitting for the theme. No doubt, it is original anyway.

Looks at least high AU to me. Not a lot of information is available about this TYPE 1

Who had it minted or how many were made I don't know.

TYPE 2 and TYPE 3 are completely different designs. There were 5 different TYPE 1 varieties struck. HK-340 Silver, reeded edge. 36mm. HK-340a Silver-plated. HK-341 Brass. HK-342 Aluminum. HK-342a Bronze.

  4. Nice coins for sure! One super picture of the eagle. It looks like the Blue Heron had banged into something on it's wing elbows. I would like t copy that eagle picture for my own use if you don't mind. I'd like to share it in an email if that's OK? Beautiful moment captured. I guess he missed the fish tho?

  5. Had a couple days there in Pennsylvania where my eyes were itchy and burning terrible. I have not seen any actual news footage of these fires or firefighting. I did see news on the air we had here. Before the smoke got pretty heavy, I was looking out my bedroom window the night before and thought . . .  that  full moon looks very orange to me.

The moonlight cast a strange reddish glow on the ground. Next day you couldn't see a half mile away.

To top it off, we only got our first rainfall in over a month on Friday. Things were looking pretty apocalyptic. We got a good downfall and a couple more showers. Maybe it dampened the stuff in the air, but it seems to be mostly gone for now.

I have asthma, COPD and a touch of emphysema. I use oxygen. I would smother myself with a mask and I have heard the particles are so small, I doubt a mask would filter them, I just stayed indoors as much as I could until it passed. Maybe masks help people with good lungs but I know they cause me more trouble that doing without.

  6. Early imitation LC-60C2

I don't own an original Bust and Harp token but this is pretty close in appearance. They cost a lot more than the imitations as a rule,

They got to be pretty weird looking, I wonder if it was done on purpose, mocking King George I. ???

Maybe designed to appear as well circulated, Wear can hide counterfeits I suppose. This one has very little wear.

After taking hundreds and hundreds of pictures over the past couple months, I'll have a few to post. This is an imitation half penny token from Lower Canada dated 1820 but was struck around 1835. There are numerous varieties of this imitation Bust and Harp type token.

The earliest were very close copies of originals and they became more and more distorted and crude as time went on in producing them.

I think I have a dozen and 8 or so are completely different than the others.

In the Charleton catalog of Canadian Colonial Tokens this one is identified as LC-60E2,

Reminds me of the old Elephant Man movie.

I too am going through my own data entry phase, though the purpose is not for a sale.

I'm currently writing my own software to do the following:

    • Store relevant information about coins that's currently in an Excel spreadsheet
    • Automatically generate album pages to place my coins
    • Autogenerate timelines for my coins
    • Autogenerate maps of where my coins are from
    • Automatically update the necessary pages on my website with this information

I'm still at the early stages. So far I have the import from Excel working and I'm almost finished with the data entry UI. This weekend I hope to start autogenerating my album pages.

I'll tell ya what, time flew since I started my project, working many hours a day on it.

I have a weekly commitment and every week I can't believe how fast that week went that it is that day again already.

It is quite an accomplishment for me. Something I knew I should do. Good for the wife, in case I couldn't make heads or tails of it someday (soon). They will fetch more being organized. I was going to take them to Heritage in Philly but I don't think I will. I don't want to drive into that city anyway, especially with all that stuff.

It will still be a while til they go I think but it will happen now.

Just to clarify, are you still interested in buying any coins in the future (ancient or otherwise), or are you trying to dispose of your entire collection?

Let's put it this way, lol

If I dispose of most of my collection, I can justify buying some better ancient coins. More is not always better. Best is better.

    No, I'm not quitting. haha

    Had to do this first.

  10. I have now entered over 3600 items on a spreadsheet file where I have then described and located items Then a good portion of them are linked to an image. I can find my duplicates or items I really don't want to keep anymore and "pull" them for sale.

Our local coin club is having our annual coin show where I have rented a table. I picked up three of those showcases we are all familiar with and I hope to fill two of them. A buddy of mine is sharing the table with his stuff and I'm letting him use one of my cases.

After the show, I'll remove the items sold from my inventory file and then I am going to pick over my collection and send the rest to auction. The auctioneer should be happy with the files and pictures!

I guess I'll get rid of well over half and probably worry about what to do with the proceeds then.

This project took me over 2 months to complete. Everything is accounted for, I have 300 images to take yet and I still want to continue entering the grades on my Jefferson nickel set. Goal is to have the cases filled and file completed by July 1.

It is so nice to know exactly where something is and what I have.

Just a screenshot peek at my files … there are several more columns

  12. Today I went to an auction. The auctioneer is a freind of mine and he has sold several hundred lots for me in the past.  I shall be returning to him to do it again but to keep on his good side, I just had to show up today.

I went with these 4 lots in mind. They were not cheap but I did get a much better deal than if I bought them at a shop or on eBay or a coin show.

Finally after 40 years I can say I have every Franklin Half dollar in proof and uncirculated condition. All of them are very nice in my set.

I don't know much about my set as far as full bell lines and cameo proofs go. It doesn't matter too much to me. They are all awesome in my opinion. I got the last 4 today and they are residing in proof sets. 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953. The last 4 holes are filled.

It was all I bought today.

    ( My wife was with me)  . . . . LOL!

I took these pictures for inventory when I got home.

  13. You know you're addicted to ancient coins when...

You find yourself in handcuffs leaving the museum because you believed what somebody told you about the age old superstition that

"Italians always placed coins under statues for good luck and health."

  14. I'm getting ready to hold a table and sell at our local small coin show. I am also cataloging this mess for my wife and heirs.

Heck, I am even having a tough time figuring it out, so I am sure they would be lost without a big file. Has links to images, description, values and location and is sortable. Just finished my ancients and other older types this morning. That was tough. Only a couple thousand to go!

I'll be grading my complete set of Jefferson nickels last, which only a very small portion of it is certified. It is very complete as far as I care to go. I will assign step counts and grades. It is probably worthy of being one of those top pop sets but I ain't paying for that nonsense. Then I have quite a few duplicates but no junky stuff is left. I still have 700 medals to enter. A lot of those images are done and they are ready to be typed up.

This whole project will help me pick out my showcase items that I don't care to keep for selling at the show.

I did see an amazing gold byzantine coin at the coin shop last week. Maybe I will be able to buy it after the July show. It was almost 5 grams and cost about 1000.00 but it was in a PCGS slab and in mint state. I think it was one of those "cupped" type. I forget the specifics. I can't get it out of my mind since. LOL

Thanks for the "likes" in return.

Now to go cut the grass! AGAIN!

  15. Thought I'd pop in and say hello. I have been busy cataloging all my coin collection on a spreadsheet and organizing them to location. Only a small portion is ancient stuff but it was the most difficult to word correctly in different columns. Today I am up to my 2100th entry and I have a long way to go.

I log on every now and then, maybe a few times a week, other times without logging in I look around. I haven't bought a new coin to post in quite awhile, That's just one of my "To do" projects I have going on.

I did want to say that I still love this site and all the cool people. So polite and helpful! Thanks

    Happy Springtime to all!
