  1. Love looking at these great small coins.

My smallest coin is this diobol of Perdicca III, Kingdom of Macedon, 365 - 359 BC, 10mm, .93g. Purchased last year from NAC.

The silver coins of Perdicca (or Perdikkas) III are quite rare. He was the older brother of Phillip II, who became a little more famous!

My motivation for purchasing this coin was I wanted a coin with a portrait of Herakles in my collection, and being fussy preferred a bearded portrait of good style with a lion scalp headress that looked like a lion. This fit the bill, and whilst not cheap for something so small, was within my means, and much less expensive than what it sold previously 12 or so years ago.

  2. Love those medals, particularly the Tower Bridge one. When I was a child, my mum bought me a jigsaw puzzle of Tower Bridge, because she knew it was my favourite Bridge in the world, and London one of my favourite cities. Still have it and might get it out this weekebd and get my girls to help me put it together again!

Thanks for sharing and reviving memories of my childhood.

  3. I have a drachm from ancient Gaza in Palestine of all places. Struck c. 450 - 330 BC (a large date range so hard to be precise).

Persian looking fella on the obverse and Bes on the reverse. Bes will have a pretty serious headache with that test cut (which most examples of this rare coin seem to have).

That is a really wonderful large-sized coin, @idesofmarch01!! Thanks for sharing. The story of Minotaur and the labyrinth is my most favorite among all Greek myths. I have the following Greek coins that illustrate ancient myths.

I really love this coin too. Europa being ravaged by Zeus in the guise of an eagle is wonderful imagery. You should be really proud of this coin.

  5. I remember taking note of that coin when perusing the Triton sale, and thinking........."if only". Beyond my means, but great to see it added to your fabulous collection of Roman coins. A beautiful coin with a great story to tell.

  6. Very sad news indeed. Always enjoyed seeing his coins and learning from his excellent writing. Will be sadly missed on here, and even more so by his family & friends of course. Will be remembered by me for those beautiful coins on that distinctive blue background.

  7. Congratulations to anyone who had a win!

I haven't bid in CNG auctions for quite a while. There was a Greek coin I was interested in, and it was hammering a couple of increments below my max, so decided to bid.

Now, I don't know if there's a trick to that slide to bid thingy.......but I was sliding for dear life......but nothing would happen. It could be my phone that's the problem. Anyway, it's not the end if the world and I wasn't hooked on it, but I think it was a decent price.

On a positive note I saved some money and there's bound to be sonething else turn up I want soon enough.

  8. On a serious note, I only purchased two coins this year, well down on normal, as more mundane family matters have taken precedence. But I've done more reading and research, and have enjoyed that aspect of the hobby almost as much as the coins. So I hope you keep posting Doug, as this thread has been interesting to me.

  9. Wow, as a collector of Ancient Greek coins, I appreciate every single one of those.

I tend to arrange my coins in the order of which I like most (be it beauty, historical significance, rarity, mint or a combination of all those).

I can honestly say your Syracuse dekadrachm and Carthage trihemistater would comfortably sit at number one in my tray. I will never own coins to match those. The Gela didrachm would go close too, as would the Syracuse 100 litrai.

Congratulations on these incredible additions yo your collection.

  10. "As always, comments are welcome, and, also as always, my apologies for the length of some of the footnotes. Please feel free to ignore them and just look at the coins!"

This is what  I used to do, but I've tried reading and learning more about Roman coins this year, so appreciate your efforts. My favourite of this lot is the coin with the Temple of Jupiter. Coins showing actual ancient buildings are fantastic. #2 is also a fascinating coin and write up.

  11. I've learnt a lot about Roman coins this year from the likes of yourself and others. I'm usually focused just on Greek coins. So I thankyou for that.

I have to say #2 is my favourite to look at, but if I could own two coins, they would be #1 & #6. If I was to collect Roman, think I'd go with an architecture themed collection. A coin with the Colloseum on it, priceless.
