Edward VI is the latest British monarch for whom I have no coins, precisely because I'm waiting for a coin like that. The fact that the only other monarchs I'm missing after 1066 are Edward V, Richard III and William I shows how hard it is to find one. Do you have Matilda? If so, please show 🙂

If so, please show 🙂 No I don't 😉 I don't count her as a monarch - I'd never seen her listed as a monarch until Wikipedia came along, and even then it has her under 'disputed claimant' along with Louis VIII and Lady Jane Grey. Still, I haven't yet decided whether to get a coin of hers or not, purely for the history. I had this discussion on a forum before, and I think we concluded even her highest grade coins are terrible and hugely expensive. But if I do, I will be the first to show it 😁 Numismatics dives down this rabbit hole a lot. With Roman emperors, every claimant in a far-flung provincial town gets counted as an emperor if he struck a single extant coin. Even Wikipedia doesn't think Domitian II was an emperor. I'm focusing on emperors who truly ruled over Britain, so I can ignore the likes of Saturninus, Uranius Antoninus and even Constans II, and completing a collection is actually possible. Oh yes, there are a lot of ugly coins in the medieval British series. My British collection starts at Henry VII when the portraits became artistic. I wouldn't mind a fantasy Queen Jane piece from Emery, just for completeness. I have a fantasy crown of Edward VIII to fill in that impossible hole. I haven't decided whether to go back further in time (before Henry VII). I love the pre-1066 era historically but haven't made up my mind whether those very expensive pennies are worth my while collecting. I certainly won't be bothered with sceats - i need a king's portrait or name on my coins! My Roman one-per-ruler series includes everyone i can afford - usurper or not - including Uranius Antoninus. I probably won't bother with Regalianus or Pacatian/Jotapian ... You just can't find a nice coin from these guys.

The later Saxons have kings’ names and better portraits for not a huge amount - Aethelred II, Edward the Confessor, Cnut - still cartoons, but not just a few lines facing forwards. A Henry VI groat can be pretty spectacular, though. 1

If i get started though, due to my OCD, i'll probably want a coin of everyone from Offa onwards! Resisting the urge to get started.... but it's so hard! 1

I particularly love the profile bust from the earlier "base" shilling. In fact, the boy king has such a great coin series, i might start a specialist collection! Generally speaking I prefer portraits in profile to those in full face, but in Edward VI's case I prefer the full-face portrait. Perhaps it's my instinctive preference for the word "fine" rather than "base"! I used to have an Edward VI fine shilling, but now I have only this sixpence (Third Period, Fine Issue, S.2483).

Yes, I do like the Edward VI coins in general. For him, i've broken my "one per ruler" rule. I would like a nice sixpence like yours to complement my shillings. Ahh, there's so much to spend money on. I could go crazy going down this rabbit hole! 1
