I've been doing a fair bit of refocussing my Roman Republican coin collection in 2024 with some really quite lovely coins acquired.

One coin I couldn't resist - even if not of the highest quality - is this victoriatus with the dog on the reverse.  Of course, they are notoriously difficult to find in exceptional condition, with only a couple of really nice specimens sold in the last 5 years or more.  Thanks to @red_spork for encouraging me to go for it.

I've not got the coin in hand just yet, with nomos sensibly deferring posting to me in Australia until after the Christmas madness.  So I am hoping that it is as lovely as I am hoping, especially as the auction house described it as having an old cabinet tone.

I've yet to track down a copy of the 2008 Rosenblum catalogue, but will keep searching.

DOG, 206-195BC

AR victoriatus, 18.0mm, 2.25g, 3h, Rome mint

Obv: Laureate head of Jupiter, r.

Rev: Victory r. crowning trophy; between, dog; in exergue, ROMA.

Ex Nomos AG, obolos 34, 10 November 2024, lot 811; ex Robert Hoge Collection, acquired from William M. Rosenblum LLC/Rare Coins Mailbid Auction 38C, 5 June 2008.

I agree with @JAZ Numismatics, that's a superb example (and with a very cute dog!) Looks like it is nicely toned as well. Congratulations on scoring such an attractive example of a rare type!

The dog is gorgeous, I agree!  I am sure it will be fantastic in hand.  Not an easy type to get hold of, so I am very excited!

The WayBack Machine @ Archive.org https://web.archive.org/ - is always a useful place to look for archived web pages.  In this case the web version of Rosenblum's catalogs have images on the web that are not in the mailbid list.
