edteach Posted December 24, 2024 · Member Posted December 24, 2024 What are your thoughts on this Gallienus Hippocamp? It looks good to me. I don't see any signs of casting or other things that would make me question it. Thanks for any advice 7 Quote
Roman Collector Posted December 24, 2024 · Patron Posted December 24, 2024 Looks genuine to me. It has the usual dumpy flan seen on the issue and the legends are therefore incomplete, but the devices are all there. A perfect specimen of the issue is very challenging to acquire and would be a three-figure coin. There's always something wrong with one of these. Here's my weakly-struck specimen. 4 1 Quote
edteach Posted December 24, 2024 · Member Author Posted December 24, 2024 Thanks. It was priced right and although the writing is cut off the images are in nice shape. 1 Quote
Orange Julius Posted December 26, 2024 · Member Posted December 26, 2024 Yeah looks fine to me too. Here’s mine. 3 Quote
Romismatist Posted December 26, 2024 · Member Posted December 26, 2024 I would say it's genuine as well. Has anyone ever seen this type faked? Quote
Valentinian Posted December 26, 2024 · Member Posted December 26, 2024 I think the OP coin is genuine. Here's mine of that type: 20 mm. 2.65grams. NEPTVNO CONS AVG N below. RIC sole reign 245, page 152. Sear III 10292 The zoo series is a lot of fun to collect. Examples can be very inexpensive which gives you a chance to build a nice mini-series. There are, however, a few rarities in the series which will cost a lot more, and if you want your coins to have better quality than the one above, you will have to wait and them pay a large premium over examples in more-typical condition like those in this thread so far. 4 Quote
