Robi Posted December 15, 2024 · Member Posted December 15, 2024 Hi! I really like large bronze Seleucid coins, unfortunately they are quite rare (I think large bronze coins were sometimes collected and melted down after a change of power in the empire, but maybe they were simply minted in smaller quantities??). Here is my second "octuple" Seleucid coin - for comparison, the smallest coin I have from the same ruler. The big one: 31 mm, 27,35 g. Sc 1251. Date Range: 211 BC–208 BC Denomination: Denomination AA (octuple) Authority: Antiochus III the Great State: Seleucid Empire Mint: Ecbatana Obverse Type: Diademed head of Antiochus III right (Type B) Portrait: Antiochus III the Great Reverse Legend: BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ ANTIOXOY Type: Tripod-lebes ornamented with filleted horse foreparts Symbol (Outer left field): Houghton Monogram 405.2, consists of Π, Α, Ρ, and The small one: 9 mm, 0.71 g. Sc 1088 Date Range: 202 BC–197 BC Denomination: Denomination E (quarter) Authority: Antiochus III the Great State: Seleucid Empire Mint: Uncertain military mint 59 Obverse Type: Laureate head of Apollo right, hair in krobylos behind Deity: Apollo Reverse Legend: BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ ANTIOXOY Type: Elephant standing right Please share your big Seleucid coins 🙂 7 1 Quote
Anaximander Posted December 15, 2024 · Member Posted December 15, 2024 Sorry, @Robi, but mine's bigger. 😉. My octochalkoi weighs almost 35 gm. The fate of coins appears to mirror their king (or usurper), as the note below suggests that coins were, indeed, recalled and melted down, sort of a numismatic version of damnatio memoriae. 6 Quote
