Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted December 14, 2024 · Member Posted December 14, 2024 Is this Antioch AE Augustus or Tiberius? It looks more like Augustus. I came across it while photographing some coins. It's one of those times where I wish I had calipers/a scale, but 99.5% of the time that's done by the dealer, so I never invested in one. It's on top of a small Syracuse AE Poseidon collection slab, for size comparison. It's smaller in diameter than an As, about the same size as a Leo Solidus next to it, but it's thicker. I don't currently have a reference for Roman provincial. 3 Quote
shanxi Posted December 14, 2024 · Supporter Posted December 14, 2024 The nose isn't really hook-shaped, but it could also be Nerva. https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/3/3486 2 Quote
Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted December 14, 2024 · Member Author Posted December 14, 2024 I had forgotten that I had purchased a copy of Sear's Greek Imperial cities. The Augustus and Tiberius listings are too large. This is circa 20mm. Is that an H under the SC? Quote
Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted December 14, 2024 · Member Author Posted December 14, 2024 It's also not as thick as my Nero/Claudius SC Antioch. It was about the only salvageable provincial from the $7 dirtyoldcoins provincial order. It appears to be waxed/lacquered. I wonder if it's even genuine? Vcoins does turn up one 22.5 mm Nerva, although most are 25-29mm, and I couldn't find an H. Quote
shanxi Posted December 14, 2024 · Supporter Posted December 14, 2024 (edited) RPC list a Nerva with (21mm, 8.15g) with H, but without picture https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/3/3498 Edited December 14, 2024 by shanxi 1 Quote
Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted December 14, 2024 · Member Author Posted December 14, 2024 Ah, I'll go see if I can find any on acsearch. That's be about the diameter and weight. Quote
Benefactor DonnaML Posted December 14, 2024 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted December 14, 2024 (edited) The "H" is definitely an officina letter, and those began with Domitian on Antioch bronzes according to McAlee, so this coin has to be from Domitian or later. (Even without the "H," it couldn't be Augustus or Tiberius because their Antioch bronzes all have a distinct circle surrounding the SC, with the wreath outside that circle.) Some bronzes with officina letters are described in McAlee as being as small as AE 22 (semis), so that could be what yours is. Unfortunately, the neck is off the flan on yours -- Nerva's Antioch bronzes seem to be distinguished by their extremely long necks -- and the legend is entirely worn away, so I can't tell which emperor you have. It could be almost anyone without a noticeable beard, including a young portrait of an emperor like Marcus Aurelius. Edited December 14, 2024 by DonnaML 2 1 1 Quote
Robi Posted December 16, 2024 · Member Posted December 16, 2024 Hi. What is a weight of your coin? It can be RPC 7042 youbg Marcus Aurelius - if weight of your coin is near 9-11 g. I prefer this option, seems i can see letter C left side of head (it can be legend CΕΒ) If 6-8 I think it can be Nerva RPC 3498 3 Quote
Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted December 16, 2024 · Member Author Posted December 16, 2024 I don't have a scale at the moment, but that will be remedied as of this upcoming weekend. I'd estimate that it's in the 6-8 g class, at around 20mm. in size. Thanks for the help! Quote
Sulla80 Posted December 31, 2024 · Supporter Posted December 31, 2024 (edited) Here are all your options in RPC with H and "S C" - I like Nerva the best - and the one you highlighted with no picture is ~8g so that is possible. Chin, hair and nose seem like they could fit a Nerva of Antioch. https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/search/browse?q=antioch+H++"S+C" Edited December 31, 2024 by Sulla80 5 Quote
Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted December 31, 2024 · Member Author Posted December 31, 2024 Thanks! My scale came in, but I haven't gotten around to weighing it yet. It was a $7 coin from dirtyoldcoins. 1 Quote
