bcuda Posted December 13, 2024 · Member Posted December 13, 2024 The coin I am talking about is a coin minted from Carthage in the Cartago Nova Spain region. Some scholars think it depicts the Roman General Scipio Africanus. I know it is a very difficult coin to find but the price on this one seems way out of line. So I am asking what do you think the actual value of this coin is. Seller is asking $1200 or best offer, I think seller is fishing ? 2 1 Quote
JAZ Numismatics Posted December 13, 2024 · Member Posted December 13, 2024 The problem with assessing the value of these types (as with all fairly rare types) is that a bidding war between two or more collectors that absolutely MUST have one can drive the price up beyond anything that could reasonably be considered the mean. If you look at a handful of average hammer prices, you might think the coin had a market value around $600. But then you come across an example like this one, that got bid up to $4000. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=91169 A coin is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. How important is it to your collection? Is it $1500 important? If not, make an offer at $600 and see what happens. But sometimes with rare coins, it's worth paying the asking price simply because you don't know when the next example is going to come up for sale. 10 3 Quote
Ryro Posted December 13, 2024 · Supporter Posted December 13, 2024 I agree. Fishing is the perfect term. Likely it won't sell for that. But they are hoping someone with more dollars than scense gets excited and doesn't want to wait for one to come to auction will pay out the nose. At auction that example normally goes for around 100, 2 maybe. Though, I may be biased, that mine has a superior portrait, as mine was a gift from you! Spain, Carthago Nova Æ Unit. Roman Occupation, after 209 BC. Bare-head left (Scipio Africanus?) / Horse standing right; palm tree behind. CNH Class XI, 282; SNG BM Spain 127-128. 10.04g, 23mm, 12h. Good Very Fine. Excellent for issue. Very rare. Gift from @bcuda 10 1 1 Quote
