John, Congrats on scoring this magnificent tetradrachm 🤩! The portrait is indeed of the finest style 😍. It would be more accurate calling the metal billon & not silver (billon is low grade silver). Through testing, Richard McAlee determined the silver content of this particular type to be 27.31% silver. Pictured below is a family group of Philip I from my collection, all won at auction. 11 1 Quote

Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted November 22, 2024 · Member Posted November 22, 2024 That's a dandy example of my favorite Roman Antiochene type, the Rome-style issues of Philip. The native die-cutters weren't too bad for Philip, but it was pretty bad under Decius. 1 Quote

Taras69 Posted November 23, 2024 · Member Posted November 23, 2024 (edited) Wonderful coins you got! I got me my first tarentine Didrachm, that is not only quoted in Fischer-Bossert (nearly all of my Didrachms from there are in fact) but actually the plate example! It’s a lovely style, Fischer-Bossert 641 (O248/R493). I really love the dynamic movement of both the riders, captured perfectly at a significant moment. The reverse dies from this coin don’t have such a mannered style as the other dies from this type, but still it’s very playful and fun to look at! Edited November 23, 2024 by Taras69 Typo 10 1 Quote
SteveJBrinkman Posted November 23, 2024 · Member Posted November 23, 2024 I didn't participate in this sale unfortunately. I'm conserving funds for my trip to NYINC, but now find I cannot attend☹️. Looking at the PR's for this first NFA Auction, there are several lots I would have bid up, primarily in the Roman Republican section. Although there were a few outliers where hammer prices significantly exceeded the estimates, I thought there were quite a few opportunities to land some nice examples at a relatively low hammer price. Here are a few I expected to bring a lot more... Lot 60 C. Caecilius Metellus Caprarius - This popular type with phrygian helmet of Roma and biga of elephants on the reverse is quite pleasing and with a great NAC 61 (2011) pedigree, didn't reach the 1500 hammer price that the coin went for in that RDB collection sale. Lot 122 P. Fonteius P. f. Capito denarius with Villa Publico reverse. Very minor flaws, well centered, looks to me to be better than a 300 CHF coin. The the pre-denarius Romano didrachm RRC 13/1 at the beginning of the RR section was a surprise to me. I expected it to reach well beyond the its 925 CHF hammer price given its centering, limited wear, and legible ROMANO. It is light weight though, and possibly plated as many of these are, still... Etc. Overall, a nice selection of high grade examples. I was pleased to see another auction house offering high quality material. If their merchandise remains of this quality in subsequent sales, I suspect there will be fewer "bargains" found. 2 1 Quote
Victrix Posted November 24, 2024 · Member Posted November 24, 2024 I do like the Claudius Abinus denarii struck in Lugdunum before the pivotal battle that would take place there. It kinda fits in with my collection of 'military mints'. It's rough but in high conditions these can go for more then a 1000, so for a 125 hammer I feel like I did very well. 😄 Clodius Albinus as Augustus (AD 195-197) AR-Denarius (16.9 mm, 2.80 g, 11h). Lugdunum mint, AD 195-197. Obv. IMP CAES D CLO SEP ALB AVG, laureate head to right. Rev. FIDES LEGION COS II, clasped hands, holding legionary eagle. RIC IV 20b; BMCRE 284; RSC 24 5 Quote
