lim Posted November 15, 2024 · Member Posted November 15, 2024 (edited) I wanted to show you my favorite coin. The coin concerns the Bible. A coin from the time of Jesus Herod Antipas. I wonder if anyone deals with Bible coins? Edited November 15, 2024 by lim 5 1 Quote
CPK Posted November 16, 2024 · Supporter Posted November 16, 2024 Very nice! I'd love to add a coin of Herod Antipas to my collection someday. I also collect coins of the Bible - mostly centered around the travels of St. Paul as recorded in the book of Acts. It's a fun theme and very immersive. To anyone interested I highly recommend the book The Pocket Guide to St. Paul: Coins encountered by the Apostle on his travels by Peter Lewis and Ron Bolden. (Wakefield Press, 2002) This little coin doesn't get much recognition among collectors of Biblical coins, but it was struck and circulated at the same time and in the same general region where Jesus conducted his ministry: SYRIA, GADARA Time of Tiberius AE (11.40mm,1.88g, 12h) Struck AD 28/9 Obverse: ΤΙΒΕΡΙω, bare head of Tiberius right Reverse: LЧ-B (date) to left and right of caduceus References: RPC Online, Vol. I, No. 4814 (6th specimen this coin) This coin illustrated on wildwinds.com Very rare. Excellent condition for the type. Gadara was a city located just southeast of the Sea of Galilee, and is perhaps best-known for its mention in the gospel of Mark as the region where Jesus healed the demoniac Legion and allowed the demons into a herd of swine (5:1-20.) This coin would have been struck around the same time as these events. 5 Quote
lim Posted November 16, 2024 · Member Author Posted November 16, 2024 I wanted to show a coin from another era. These are the Amauri Crusaders, 2nd Crusade against Jerusalem. On the coin there is an image of the Holy Sepulcher 1 Quote
