Sorry, @CPK. Try again? It still works for me. I don't know if the issue is some kind of geo-location/ISP/VPN thing, your browser (cache), or subscription/login. 

I am logged into the site (automatically on open) and a subscriber to their History magazine. I am uncertain where and when you run into their paywall.

I think you have to enter your email address to get access to the quiz. I did. Got a short email from National Geographic welcoming me, but not too spammy.

The link works, but before I can start on the quiz this window pops up and I can't get around it. I don't feel like giving them my email address.

Your browser (in Settings) should have the opportunity to block unwanted popup windows. If that does not work, I'm not sure what would. Sorry I could not be of more help.
