AndCag92 Posted November 9, 2024 · Member Posted November 9, 2024 Good afternoon friends, I bought a couple of coins from a street dealer in Jerusalem in 2009. I’m aware that they are likely fake but I just want to verify (a) what are they, even if they’re fake? And (b) are they actually fake or is there a chance that they’re real. The first one I believe is Byzantine, the other I have no idea what it is. I would appreciate any help you could provide! Thanks in advance! 2 Quote
Parthicus Posted November 9, 2024 · Member Posted November 9, 2024 Coin 1 looks to be a follis of Byzantine emperor Justin I (518- 527). Coin 2 may be a Roman Provincial from one of the cities in Judea or surrounding regions. It's not possible to be 100% sure of authenticity from photos alone, but as far as I can tell both appear real. The Justin 1 is not worth much in such low grade (the mintmark on reverse is unreadable), can't be sure if the second is a rare variety but it is also low grade and thus likely not worth great deal. Others may be able to tell you more. Hope this helps. 3 Quote
Bannerknight Posted November 9, 2024 · Member Posted November 9, 2024 I agree with @Parthicus, I am quite sure the first coin is Justin 1., stylistically and from the coin marks from either Constantinople (Sear 62) or Nicomedia (Sear 83). But since the mint mark in the exergue is worn away it is impossible to be sure. Folles from Justin 2. are differently marked and usually dated on the reverse. 1 Quote
Parthicus Posted November 10, 2024 · Member Posted November 10, 2024 Okay, I think I have a match for the second coin (and I even have an example in my own collection). I think it is a Roman Provincial, of Septimius Severus (193-211), struck in the city of Rabbath-Moab in Arabia (which is now Rabba in Jordan). Obverse shows a (rather crude) portrait of Septimius Severus, reverse is a large statue of Ares (the city had become rather Hellenized, and even changed its name to Areopolis for a while). Here's my example: 4 1 Quote
