Secret Saturnalia 2024

I like pressing the Easy button.  I usually have a group of pre-selected coins bookmarked, ready to go.  My giftee's wants weren't too hard, although circumstances jettisoned the bookmarked coins.  I ended up spotting a nice piece at a good deal, so I changed plans.

It turns out well that a formerly favorite dealer screwed up and didn't obey the Saturnalia mailing instructions.  I then had to look for a coin, pronto.  It was most fortunate that Forum had a great deal on a Seleucid tetradrachm (or shekel, in this case), and doubly fortunate that it brought a lot of enjoyment, as did CPK's very generous present from last year.

A friendly reminder, if you write "Saturnalia" on the package it'll let your giftee know what it is so they don't accidently open it before the big day. 

When I'm not sure what it is that's come for me in the mail I'll have my wife open it so it doesn't spoil the surprise. She's lost both her thumbs, an eye, and can tell you what anthrax smells like but hey no spoilers for me!

I brought my gift to the post office this morning. It has an ocean to cross but I hope that it will arrive in time nonetheless.

Kingdom of France, under Henry II, AR douzain aux croissants, 1550 AD, Lyons mint. Faustina II, Roman Empire, AR denarius, 145–161 AD, Rome mint. Obv: FAVSTINAE AVG PII AVG FIL; bust of Faustina the Younger, band of pearls round head, with hair waived and coiled on back of head, draped, r. Rev: VENUS; Venus, draped, standing l., holding apple in r. hand and rudder set on dolphin, which coils round it, in l. 18mm, 3.06g. Ref: RIC III Antoninus Pius 517C (denarius). Secret Saturnalia 2021.

Low Countries, Diocese Utrecht, under Wilbrand of Oldenburg, AR denier/pening, 1227-1233 AD. Obv: bishop facing with mitre, holding crosier and book; legend (WIL - BRAND) off flan. Rev: cross with three pellets at the end of each limb, one small pellet in each angle near the centre; legend (TRAIECTVM) mostly off flan.10mm, 0.42g. Ref: van der Chijs 8.1–2. Secret Saturnalia 2022.

Constantius II, Roman Empire, AR reduced siliqua, 360–363 AD, Lugdunum mint. Obv: D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG; bust of Constantius II, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, r. Rev: VOTIS/XXX/MVLTIS/XXXX within a wreath; in exergue, LVG. 18mm, 2.31g. Ref: RIC VIII Lugdunum 216. Secret Saturnalia 2023.
