Harry G Posted November 6, 2024 · Member Posted November 6, 2024 (edited) Hi everyone! I just bought a lot of 6 coins from an auction, and among them was this Pupienus denarius. Harry G Posted November 6, 2024 · Member Author Posted November 6, 2024 (edited) Minor update I've done some more research, and a "PAX AVGVSTI" type does exist! It's not in RIC, but the British Museum has a specimen, which they have fortunately uploaded on their website. https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/C_2004-1005-3 It's a metal detecting find, so it's definitely real. Unfortunately, it's very corroded, but is clearly a PAX AVGVSTI type Comparing it to my coin: Slightly higher "O" of "CLOD" Die break visible at the top left corner of the M of "C M" "Shadow" of a beard visible The reverse of the BM coin is especially corroded, so I can't make out any distinguishing features there. However, it seems my coin is an obverse die match to a genuine example of the same type, so is real! Edited November 6, 2024 by Harry G 10 1 Quote
Ocatarinetabellatchitchix Posted November 6, 2024 · Member Posted November 6, 2024 There are hybrids of Pupienus and Balbinus, also others which combines obverse of Gordy 1 and 2 with reverses of Balbinus and Pupienus. The BM coin is the only one I know associating Pupienus and Maximinus. Maybe imitation ? I’d be curious to see if you can find a die-match with an official issue of both rulers. Good luck ! 3 Quote
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted November 6, 2024 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted November 6, 2024 The Pupienus could be heavily crystallized explaining its rough character. Also, I don't know why anyone would produce a fake in such a condition. 2 Quote
JAZ Numismatics Posted November 6, 2024 · Member Posted November 6, 2024 To me the fabric suggests a so-called limes denarius, probably mostly bronze. 3 Quote

I think I just found the matching die for the obverse! The reverse of this other coin, VICTORIA AVGG, (https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=lot&sid=1262&lot=305) is from an Aureus die, so there are two possibilities that I can think of. My coin is a limes denarius struck from stolen/out of use dies It's some kind of trial strike, or is similar to the VICTORIA AVGG coin 7 Quote
CPK Posted November 7, 2024 · Supporter Posted November 7, 2024 Interesting! It's a die match, all right. 1 Quote

An extremely interesting coin. 1 1 Quote
