Here i have a campgate coin from Constantine I with closed doors ?

Rome; 2,62 gr.; 18,42 mm. from Nummitra auction 34 nr 523.

It is not in RIC sinds obverse typ D7 is not listed for this coin. ( RIC 176 )

Looking to the top of the campgate there seems to be 6 turrets. 3 little ones and 3 big ones.

There is also an " extra wall" to the top of the design, where the 3 big turrets rest on.

Has anyone seen this design in this configuration? Please feel free to post any coins you find relevant .

Thanks,  MC9

Those are windows or archways on the turrets. Below is an example of Rome 176 for comparison.

Victor, thanks for your reply.

You are right, i have 3 other coins of this type for Constantine I, a P,T and another Q.

What do you do with the extra level ( line ) on top of the bilding?

I see that on the right side that little turret has seperet ( to the lower brick line ) ' ankers ' then the big one.

Thank , MC9

The extra line is just an engraver's whim. Notice the coin I posted above has an unusual rounded arch around the doorway. There are many different little variations in campgates.

this one is not in RIC and has a helmet with a crest made from feathers instead of the usual horsehair; circular elements (windows) on towers and a triangular arch over the doors.

There's a lot of variation on these - the engravers apparently didn't feel much need to conform too closely to an exact type.

I wonder if the engraver was trying to suggest a sort of 3-D representation with the far wall visible?

Compare to these two (not my coins). The aureus is obviously earlier, but maybe a similar idea?

@Heliodromus : I think this coin could be some kind of experiment, to be further developed?
