ela126 Posted October 22, 2024 · Member Posted October 22, 2024 I’m not sure on the level of excitement I should have with my recent purchase. It certainly doesn’t look like much, but it could be something special. Upon buying it, I knew it was a Basil 1 1332-1340 from Trebizond, a little rough bronze piece, 18mm and 1.36g. Sear 2623. Ok great. I looked for comps and the only one I saw recently was in Sam’s sale. Although the date seems odd. Am I confusing the coins or are these the same thing? (I did not pay anywhere close to the hammer price) https://www.biddr.com/auctions/nac/browse?a=4973&l=6041801 6 Quote
ela126 Posted October 22, 2024 · Member Author Posted October 22, 2024 Update: I’ve found several other comps with Sear 2623 and 1332-1340. Seems to be comparable to the price and quality on Sam’s coin. Solid score for me. Quote

ela126 Posted October 22, 2024 · Member Author Posted October 22, 2024 @Glebe wow, I didn’t know Labarum had this separate section. This is outstanding, thank you Quote

In one, the emperor has a beard and in the other, he does not have a beard. In the case of your coin, the emperor does not have a beard and although the obverse is in good condition, you cannot see the inscriptions to the left of the emperor. We cannot see the details on the reverse either. In my files I have about 15 examples of each and there are better ones than those at auction, however, their price on BIDDR is reasonable since almost all of their details can be seen. Quote
