Julius Germanicus Posted October 21, 2024 · Member Posted October 21, 2024 (edited) The OP coin was struck with an obverse die of Gordian I. It is without doubt Gordian I we see. The Victoria reverse was almost exclusively used for Gordian I on Sestertii, struck for Gordian II with only a single obverse die, which is certainly not this one. Julius Germanicus Posted October 22, 2024 · Member Posted October 22, 2024 (edited) My Gordian I: Obviously the guy on the OP coin My Gordian II with VICTORIA AVGG reverse: Obviously not the guy on the OP coin Apart from the hairline, you can easily identify Gordian II by his protruding lower lip and chubbier cheeks. Almost all major auction houses have messed this up. My Gordian II for example was sold as Gordian I in 1913. Edited October 22, 2024 by Julius Germanicus 4 1 1 Quote
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted October 22, 2024 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted October 22, 2024 Yup they screwed up. Baldness goes through the maternal side, hence Gordian the younger has a far more prominent receding hairline than his Father. He needs to go to Bosley. 1 Quote

For that amount you would have won BOTH my Gordian I and II (pictured above) together at the Künker auction a week ago. Maybe I shouldn’t have unslabbed mine 😱 1 Quote
