expat Posted October 20, 2024 · Supporter Posted October 20, 2024 I picked this issue because the version with IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG is the less common of the two versions of this issue, the other being IMP CLVDIVS AVG. Also, they struck two versions of this type with the bust left or right. The left bust appears to be much scarcer if Ocre is anything to go by. They show only 9 of this type in major institutions or collections with only two being the left facing bust. Also it is nice to see a well centred strike with the beaded border visible all round. Claudius II AE Antoninianus. Antioch Mint. 268-270 CE. IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate and draped bust left, seen from the back / IVVENTVS AVG, Hercules standing front, head left, holding club with left hand and globe in right, Lionskin. Draped over arm. Mintmark (officina letter) SΔ or dot. RIC 213 Sear5 11344. 22mm, 3.47g 13 1 Quote
Roman Collector Posted October 20, 2024 · Patron Posted October 20, 2024 (edited) Nice!! You'll want to check out the MER/RIC website for his coins. Here is the listing for yours. Claudius Gothicus has a lot of interesting varieties and a limited range of issues. It would be possible to specialize in his antoniniani and acquire a nearly complete collection of the various mints and types within a decade or so of serious collecting. I considered that as a specialty collection for a while, before settling on a similar project with Trebonianus Gallus. Here's a left-facing Claudius II in my numophylacium. Claudius II, 268-270 CE. Roman billon antoninianus, 3.41 g, 19.4 mm, 11 h. Antioch, 3rd emission, early-mid 270 CE. Obv: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate head, left. Rev: IVNO REGINA, Juno standing left, holding patera and scepter; peacock at feet. Refs: RIC 212 (3L); Cohen 133; MER/RIC temp 1048; RCV --; Alfoldi 24/3; Huvelin 1990, 39. mcwyler Posted October 20, 2024 · Member Posted October 20, 2024 This RIC 18 has a nice sharp portrait, although Annona's a bit blurry... 8 Quote

Also, this is the third emission of Antioch, so having no mintmark is the norm. The dot and Delta in exergue are marks of the earlier 269 - early 270 first and second emissions. 1 1 Quote

Gumrum Posted October 20, 2024 · Member Posted October 20, 2024 Some nice examples of Claudius II here! I myself picked up the below example, which I think is a great example of his portrait (a shame he rules in an era of such poor coin quality, besides his Aureii...) Antoninianus of Emperor Claudius II 'Gothicus', from the mint of Mediolanum, c. 268-270 CE, RIC V Claudius Gothicus 171 Obv: Bust of Claudius Gothicus, radiate, draped, right | IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG Imperator Claudius Pius Felix Augustus [Supreme commander (Imperator), Claudius, the pious, the fortunate, emperor] Rev: Victory, winged, draped, running right, holding wreath in right hand and palm in left hand. Officina mark in exergue | VICTORIA AVG Victoria Augusti [Victory of the emperor] I find it's really quite difficult to get a sense of how 3rd Century coins appear until you get them in hand, this particular antoninianus is actually a small little thing (wife's hands for scale)! 8 1 Quote
Octavius Posted October 21, 2024 · Supporter Posted October 21, 2024 Two Antoniniani of Claudius Gothicus... 1. Mars Vltor ( the avenger) ... 2. Victory over the Goths... 7 Quote
Orange Julius Posted October 21, 2024 · Member Posted October 21, 2024 I have many Claudius II coins and many that are really cool but this is my current favorite, the quintessential Claudius Gothicus coin. Claudius II Antoninianus. Cyzicus. IMP CLAVDIVS PF AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right, two dots beneath bust / VICTORIAE GOTHIC, Two captives bound and seated back to back at the base of a trophy. Alföldi 32/3; Normanby hoard 1108A; RIC V-1, 252 Cyzicus var (no mintmark). 6 Quote
