edteach Posted October 17, 2024 · Member Posted October 17, 2024 I had picked out a nice Postumus coin Antoninianus, the shop on Vcoins waited a week and than told me they sold it at a coin show and did not mark it as sols. So I am looking for a replacement. Here are two I found that are in the same price range. Thoughts on these two coins, thanks. 4 1 Quote
JAZ Numismatics Posted October 17, 2024 · Member Posted October 17, 2024 The strike on the reverse of the first coin is superior to the second. Also, the VIRTVS types are common for Posumus, so if you wanted one later you could easily find a better example. My vote is #1. 5 Quote
-monolith- Posted October 17, 2024 · Member Posted October 17, 2024 Both are very nice. I think I like the Victory better. A similar situation occurred with me from an online auction. I purchased this coin, but they couldn't find it after the auction so they sent me these 4 coins instead (sorry for the crummy cell phone photos). 1 Quote
John Conduitt Posted October 17, 2024 · Supporter Posted October 17, 2024 They're nice coins. You tend to be able to get some really good, sharp portraits of Postumus, although the price does go up. Gallic mint reverse dies are usually horribly worn but Postumus is not too bad. Quote

I had the same situation years ago, buying a modern (scarce) coin from eBay. It was an OK-ish deal. The seller contacted me and apologized - same reason. I don't think he sold it to someone else, it just happened. I will not comment the rarity, but my choice would be #2. I like coins from this period with more silvering. My Postumus coins, one without silvering and one with plenty of it. 1 Quote
Romismatist Posted October 17, 2024 · Member Posted October 17, 2024 You can find coins of Postumus in quite nice condition for decent prices. You can get ones in similar condition to the two you have on EBay France for EUR 20 or so if you're patient. I got this one for EUR 13 a few years ago. 2 Quote
expat Posted October 17, 2024 · Supporter Posted October 17, 2024 I got the same issue a few months back @Romismatist for 22 Euros. 2 Quote
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted October 17, 2024 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted October 17, 2024 (edited) This one which I really like is from @JAZ Numismatics....don't remember the price but it has a nice Serapis which hardly is a Gallic or Germanic deity. Also note the billon has a silver appearance, not just a wash. I saw a chart somewhere which had said early Postumus coins had around 15% silver content. Also, what emperor wouldn't want Serapis as his companion? Edited October 17, 2024 by Ancient Coin Hunter 6 1 Quote
rasiel Posted October 18, 2024 · Member Posted October 18, 2024 That sucks. With coins often the underlying suspicion is that the seller had a change of heart and figures he can get a better price. But it could really be an honest mistake. At work sometimes a customer buys something off the website and then when we go to fill the order the bin is empty. Awkward and embarrassing :-( Rasiel Quote

There's no subterfuge involved. Once I returned home from a show and sat down to delete sold coins, only to discover a few of them had sold on vcoins the very same day. Ugh. There's nothing you can do but apologize and refund. Quote
wuntbedruv Posted October 18, 2024 · Member Posted October 18, 2024 (edited) At the other end of the scale (actual deception versus accidental selling elsewhere), I once purchased a Northumbrian styca on eBay as an auction. It hammered for about £90, which was ultimately what it was worth. As I went to pay, the auction was cancelled and the seller told me he couldn't find the coin. They went in defensively rather than apologetically, which heavily suggested that they were simply not happy with the price. Three months later it was relisted by the same seller with two other coins as a group lot. A dealer acquaintance of mine purchased the group lot for £110 hammer and sold me the styca at £90. I sent him a picture of myself grinning, holding the coin with the caption 'hey look, I found your coin for you'. Edited October 18, 2024 by wuntbedruv 3 2 Quote
Postvmvs Posted October 18, 2024 · Member Posted October 18, 2024 @wuntbedruv sometimes things do work out! In 20 or so years I have twice had Vcoins orders cancelled by the dealer. Both times were very ... suspect. Coins just listed, for what was a very good deal. 1 Quote
