akeady Posted October 8, 2024 · Supporter Posted October 8, 2024 (edited) A few years ago CGB had one from the same dies, but with the reverse die break in a worse state. It wasn't as nice, but it was tempting - buy it and no more coins for a year or so 😄 - they dropped the price by 10% and someone bought it - not I 😞 https://www.cgb.fr/sicile-syracuse-decadrachme-ttb,bgr_350391,a.html If we tape out this chip and someone buys the company I'll be in the queue for a nice decadrachm, otherwise I'm skint! 😄 ATB, Aidan. Benefactor Theodosius Posted October 9, 2024 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted October 9, 2024 Clueless previous owner had it mounted in a necklace for his wife? What kind of collector does that in the year 2000? John 2 1 2 2 1 Quote
Croatian Coin Collector Posted October 9, 2024 · Member Posted October 9, 2024 I wouldn't take a plugged coin into my collection if somebody paid me to, never mind me paying 60000 CHF + buyer's premium + insurance + shipping for it! 3 Quote

AncientCoinnoisseur Posted October 9, 2024 · Member Posted October 9, 2024 I am partial to Euainetos’ style (especially the bottom right), but I love Kimon’s hairnet (although the face is not my favourite, the ‘double-chin’ and severe look is not for me). I found the perfect one to be this, since it kinda blends the best of both worlds: the more delicate traits of Euainetos and the masterful hairnet of Kimon: Too bad for the double strike, otherwise it could have been the definitive, perfect Syracuse Dekadrachm 7 1 Quote

The Apollo head tetradrachm of Katane by Herakleidas is also wonderful - in the Paolo Orsi Museum in Syracuse, they have many decadrachms and tetradrachms, but the Herakleidas was the stand out coin for me. There are a couple of obverse dies and one is far better than the other. ATB, Aidan. 2 1 1 Quote

akeady Posted October 9, 2024 · Supporter Posted October 9, 2024 Ah, yes - 10, the Kimon and 11, the Herakleidas. I have no photo' of the example in the Paolo Orsi Museum, but it was spectacular. ATB, Aidan. 1 Quote
