Lismain Numisatics Posted October 1 · Member Share Posted October 1 Hello, I recently acquired this Denaruis from an antique shop. I didn't pay much for it and I am having trouble identifying it. I have consulted my copy of Sear volume 1 and have tried a search and can't find another example. It clearly has been struck (no casting marks) and weighs 3.08 G and is 1.74 mm diameter, so around what you would expect for a Denaruis. The obverse is Galba with some wear and what appears to be a banker's mark and the legends are known legends used by Galba IMP SER GALBA AVG. The reverse appears to be Salus with the legends TR POT COS II. This would fit with the number of consulships Galba had for the 15 days he reigned in AD 69. Could this be genuine or is it a fake? Please let me know if I have missed anything, it would be good to know if I haven't spotted anything for further reference.
CPK Posted October 1 · Supporter Share Posted October 1 Hello @Lismain Numisatics, welcome to the forum! The portrait style and shiny surfaces look suspicious to me. Additionally, I don't believe that reverse type, or legend, were ever used for Galba. I could be wrong, but unfortunately it looks like a modern fake to me. 1
sand Posted October 1 · Member Share Posted October 1 Hello @Lismain Numisatics. Welcome to Nvmis Forvms. I have no knowledge of Galba denarii. But, there are probably many Nvmis Forvms members, who are familiar with Galba denarii. Perhaps more of them will chime in, to add to @CPK's analysis. John Conduitt Posted October 1 · Supporter Share Posted October 1 (edited) Yes the reverse doesn't make sense. It seems to be an Aelius reverse and there aren't many choices for the obverse 70 years earlier. Galba was killed 2 weeks after becoming Consul for the second time so it is unlikely.
