Didier Attaix Posted September 28 · Supporter Share Posted September 28 Hi everybody, I found this one in an obscure French salesroom. In my opinion, the nice face is genuine, but probably not the headdress painted in an unusual colour. The description is honest and indicates repaints. antwerpen2306 Posted September 30 · Member Share Posted September 30 It is a very nice face, but I think you have to check several points : the back side : have you o photo. If the mask is not to big, it can be only one piece of wood, if bigger, more pieces of wood are necessary because wood was rare, the front side : I think the face also is repainted. It is not normal that the gilding is still in this quality. On the right of the chin, you can see fault lines. These mask have a wooden base with a plaster layer and there are often fractions, as here. If you control the circumference of the face, you see a black line, inside gilded, outside greyish but at the ears the gilding is going outside the black line. Same remarks for the eyes and the eyebrows : such quality you will never find on this kind os masks. As you said, the headdress is painted. Another problem is the form of the mask.If you see the underside, you see it has made a part of a bigger whole, proved by the right corner. I think, you have maybe an authentic form of Egyptian part of a sarcophagus, see back side to check, but bad restored. I join 2 photos : 1 of a mask 'tout court' and 1 of a mask of a sarcophagus For me, it is nice but not original, if you can buy it fot a good price, do it and tr to restore it, if possible. antwerpen2306 Posted September 30 · Member Share Posted September 30 I have again problems, now when I open anything I receive a Flemish translation, but a very good one. As said, a second mask, sawed of a sarcophagus, sorry for the pictures, not the best, but it is not my specialty. Both are saitic period. The first mask measures 23 cm x 16.5 cm x 10.5 cm , the second : 48 cm x 32 cm. I have no photo of the back, to complicated to make, but the mask is made of several pieces of wood. greetings, Albert
Didier Attaix Posted October 2 · Supporter Author Share Posted October 2 Hi Albert, There is no picture of the back side of the mask. I got many comments on this mask from the AncientArtifacts group. The nose has been obviously restored and repainted. The blue colour of the painted headdress is not unusual, see below for parallels of the Ptolemaic Period. The red circled areas are similar on these masks. All the best, Didier
Didier Attaix Posted October 2 · Supporter Author Share Posted October 2 Hi again Albert, I also have a wooden sarcophagus mask, similar to yours. I bought it for a reasonable price at Hôtel Drouot Paris, see attachment. This sale was totally unpredictable. Many copies, clearly advertised as such, sold for more than my mask...Sarcophagus_mask.docxSarcophagus_mask.docxSarcophagus_mask.docxSarcophagus_mask.docxSarcophagus_mask.docxSarcophagus_mask.docxSarcophagus_mask.docxSarcophagus_mask.docx
Mucius Scaevola Posted October 3 · Member Share Posted October 3 The thing is..with all these doubts, would you really enjoy the artifact for a long time? I made purchases like this and after some time I gave them away. There might be some original material underneath, but let's be honest; it might be completely new too. It's your choice at the end, but better sleep a night or two over it.
Didier Attaix Posted October 3 · Supporter Author Share Posted October 3 Hi Mucius Scaveola, There are not so many doubts. I will, in any case, bid only for a limited amount of money. Best, Didier
