Coinmaster Posted September 27 · Member Share Posted September 27 (edited) Hi all, Does anyone know more about these various interesting control marks? I read somewhere that they might be used to distinguish specific batches of coin production from different mints, but could there be more to it? Any thoughts? This coin type is from 90 BC. See: https://numismatics.org/crro/id/rrc-340.1. Laureate head of Apollo, right or left; control-mark below chin, behind, or both. Horseman, right or left, with palm-branch, torch, or whip; control-mark above, below, or both. (Source of the coin images: coinarchives.com.) expat Posted September 27 · Supporter Share Posted September 27 Quite an interesting subject. One theory was to allow authorities to track debased and plated copies back to those resposible. Here is an interesting read and data regarding the use of control marks on Republican coinage https://livyarrow.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/witschonke-2012-die-marks-rbn.pdf 6
