Egor125 Posted September 26 · Member Share Posted September 26 Hello Please help me determine the authenticity of the coin. The lack of a dot between “S MARIA” and the lack of partitions in the letters “A” are confusing. It also looks strange that HVNGARY is written with a V, although at that time HUNGARY was written with a U. Is this a variation or a fake? The coin was purchased here https://one.bid/ru/%D0%9C%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B5%D1%82%D1%8B-Joseph-II-1-Thaler-1783-A/2329816 https://one.bid/ru/Монеты-Joseph-II-1-Thaler-1783-A/2329816
sand Posted September 27 · Member Share Posted September 27 (edited) Hello @Egor125. Welcome to Nvmis Forvms. I don't have any knowledge of the coin type. But, there are probably Nvmis Forvm members, who are knowledgeable about the coin type. Perhaps 1 or 2 of them, will see this thread, and provide help with authentication. It may take a few days. If possible, I recommend moving this thread to the "World Coins" section, rather than the "Medieval" section, because most persons consider the medieval period to have ended approximately 1500 AD. Mucius Scaevola Posted September 27 · Member Share Posted September 27 I'm not an expert here at all, but I had some time now to check because I was curious. Later issues like 1786 have the HVNGARY writing, but 1783 has the U. The dot you could explain somehow, but this here is harder.
Al Kowsky Posted September 27 · Member Share Posted September 27 I see no reason to condemn this coin as fake 🤔.

Более поздние выпуски, например 1786 года, имеют надпись HVNGARY, но 1783 года — U. Точку можно как-то объяснить, но вот это сложнее. However, on the 20 kreuzers of 1783 from the Vienna Mint the letter V appears in the word HUNGARY. Perhaps this also influenced thalers

I am of the same opinion, but I still have some doubts Perhaps you know the history of this coin? Why is there no dot, the letter "V" is used, and there are strange letters A?
