David Atherton Posted September 23 · Member Share Posted September 23 I just added another rare Curtis Clay coin! I've had my eye on it for quite a while and couldn't hold off any longer. The likelihood of coming across another example is very slim. Titus as Caesar [Vespasian] Æ As, 9.81g Rome mint, 73 AD Obv: T CAESAR VESPASIAN IMP IIII PON TR POT III COS II; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r. Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTI; S C in exergue; Victory adv. r. to place wreath on standard and holding palm RIC 572 (R2). BMC -. BNC -. Ex Harlan J Berk BBS 225, 30 November 2023, lot 60. Ex Curtis Clay Collection. Ex eBay, 8 October 2006. A Titus Caesar as struck in a very rare issue from 73 lacking CENS in the obverse legend. RIC notes: 'The omission of CENS from the titulature of this issue is surprising, since TR P III dates the coin after July 1st and CENS had been adopted in April.' Perhaps a transitional issue? Missing from both the BM and Paris collections. NB: One could plausibly argue the Victory with standard reverse is a 'Judaea Capta' type. I decline to categorise it as such based on the generic nature of the design and the lack of a captive. Hendin does not include the variety in his Guide to Biblical coins as a Judaea Capta type. In hand. As always, thank you for looking! 6
