Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted September 23 · Member Share Posted September 23 I've always thought Sasanian coins were really neat. However, I generally only collect the post 591 coins of Khrusru II. Here's my nicest Sasanian. Ardashir III (AD 628-630) AR drachm (35mm, 4.03g). WH (Veh-Ardashir) mint. Struck in regnal year 2 (AD 629/30). Bust of Ardashir III r., wearing first crown / Fire altar flanked by attendants. Göbl type I/1.
mcwyler Posted September 23 · Member Share Posted September 23 (edited) My most recent fire altar. Kavād (Kavādh) I (Second reign, 499-531). Drachm. Bust of king right / Fire altar with attendants. ( 4.01 g. 30.3 mm ). Fun fact: Between his first and second reigns K. was imprisoned in the "Tower of Oblivion". How cool is that? Finn235 Posted September 23 · Member Share Posted September 23 Nice page! Some of my favorite fire altars Persis, Vahsir (1st/2nd century AD) AR hemidrachm - my only pre-Sassanian fire altar Ardashir I drachm Shapur I drachm Hormizd II drachm (I like the manifestation of Ahura Mazda in the flames) Skipping forward a bit, this Yazdegerd III drachm was minted in the final year that the Sassanian empire existed, in one of the last mints to still declare allegiance to the Shahanshah after Iran proper had already fallen to the Arabs. Some non-Iranian fire altars derived from Sassanian designs Hephthalites Alchon Kidarite Nezak Turks Arab Sasanian Eastern Sistan Bukhar Khudat Kashmir Smast Kushano-Sasanians
