airhead1983 Posted September 22 · Member Share Posted September 22 Hey Everyone, I hope you had a great week! My week ended on high note. I got my one and only coin purchase for the year and I couldn’t be more happy and terrified at the same time! My usual coin purchases are either Bible or reptile related. But, when I saw this coin on Marc Breitsprecher’s website, I had to get it. It was his description that sold me on it. 😃 https://mrbcoins.com/cgi-bin/lotinfo.pl?id=60125 Of course, I apologize for my terrible picture taking skills. I can never find good enough light. I’m now kind of getting into imitations. They can get pretty wacky, especially the Danube imitations of the Thasos tetdradrachm! Usually, I ask people to post thinks that are completely irrelevant to the coin I post. 🤪 But, this time, I’d love to see your craziest ancient imitation! Happy Sunday! I even had work done in the evening and Saturday. But that's done now and your Neanderthal coin was just the thing I needed, thanks! You in return you must see the crazy coin from @TIF: A true alien from the Planet of the Ant Men!
Bailathacl Posted September 22 · Member Share Posted September 22 Mark had a LOT of fun with that description. Yet it is totally accurate.

Garnier. “Minimi constantiniens trouvés à Reims, Appendice II: Corpus des imitations.” Numismatica e Antichità Classiche 6 (1977) : 330- 315. This map shows the locations of imitations from A.D. 330- 348. The article lists the locations and types of imitations found, and the publication information of the finds, i.e. Numismatic Chronicle. 52 imitations were found near Carnuntum, which included 37 VLPP imitations. It seems that this might have been a site were they made the imitations. Very close to the limes

After a very small fiddle with IrfanView Indeed imitations can be fun. My first one was a surprising VRBS ROMA. It was very challenging to understand what it was (much smaller than an official one) and I kept looking for Greek fractions with Athena facing left until I realized the reverse (it was NOT obvious what the image is until I saw it) Usual Tetricus unoffical coin. A Julian II I posted many times - I really don't think a Rome engraver could have manufactured such a beautiful portrait. I am currently waiting for another unofficial interesting coin - a 1st century denarius where the job was only 50% nicely done.
Roman Collector Posted September 23 · Patron Share Posted September 23 What a fun coin, @airhead1983!!! Here's a crazy barbarous "two victories" imitation.
Al Kowsky Posted September 23 · Member Share Posted September 23 CELTIC, Danube Region. Imitation of Thasos tetradrachm, late 2nd - 1st century BC. AR: 16.35 gm, 35 mm, 12 h.
mcwyler Posted September 23 · Member Share Posted September 23 This one was described as "Vandals or barbaric imitation" I think the Vandals might have done a better job, and it's just an illiterate counterfeiter. And for comparison a similar more official one 4
airhead1983 Posted September 29 · Member Author Share Posted September 29 Thanks everyone! Sorry for the super late reply- work has been frustrating and exhausting. I love those imitations, @Victor_Clark! I haven’t seen those kind before. Thanks for the picture upgrade, @ambr0zie, it looks so much better! Great coins! Great portrait, @Roman Collector! @Al Kowsky - I’m obsessed with your Danube imitation tetradrachm! I’d love to have one of those someday. The Vandals did a pretty good job, @mcwyler! @Ryro - Those are great fun! Thanks again, friends! Have a great day! Erin 😃 2 1
Robi Posted September 29 · Member Share Posted September 29 (edited) @airhead1983 interesting imitation, I have several, but this one i like: imitation of Trajan Antioch SC bronze or a drunk mint-man? 😄 And this one Titus with Agrippa II, Iudaea, Caesarea Paneas - irregular one or imitation - strange head of Titus 😉 Edited September 29 by Robi
