Roman Collector Posted September 19 · Patron Share Posted September 19 I love print catalogs and fixed price lists. I saw this one in the CBG.fr print catalog and had to buy it! Lovely detail on such a tiny coin. I like the portrait of Hercules on the obverse. Dating this issue is tough because the various references don't agree. Mattingly (BMCRE) proposes 98-102 CE, so that's what I'm going with, but if somebody has a different date supported by better evidence, please chime in. Let's see your coins with Hercules, your quadrantes, or anything you feel is relevant! Trajan, 98-117 CE. Roman Æ quadrans, 2.78 g, 14.5 mm, 7 h. Rome, 98-102 CE. Obv: IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GERM, laureate bust of Hercules, right, wearing lion skin around neck. Rev: S C, club upright. Refs: RIC 699 var.; BMCRE 1071-72; Cohen 344 var.; RCV 3249; Hill UCR 104; Woytek 603b. 12 3 1
Amarmur Posted September 19 · Member Share Posted September 19 This was an impulse buy really just for the solid price of $150 or $15 per coin there are few solid coins here. The Commodus Sestertius with Salus has a really nice green emerald patina The Nero Arca Pais coin is fairly scarce and in ok shape nothing crazy The Septimus Severus Sestertius with 3 Monetas is solid VG Those 3 caught my attention to buying this lot. I will probably sell the others. 7

Well, you made me do it! 😄 I too enjoy paging through physical catalogs, and have been on the fence about a rare little coin in cgb's latest fixed-price list. Just ordered today, and they gave me 10% off, too! Nice coin, by the way. 😉
Robi Posted September 19 · Member Share Posted September 19 Great coin! I have some coins with Herkules. But the last one is with the Herkules club - unpublished Phoenicia Tyre?

Benefactor DonnaML Posted September 19 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted September 19 A wonderful find, @Roman Collector! Oddly enough, it was the cgb.fr printed fixed price catalog I received in the mail that ultimately led me to my new Julia Domna/"Cybele in lion quadriga" denarius: I saw another (quite inexpensive) specimen of the same type listed in the catalog, but when I went to the cgb website and looked at a larger photo, I didn't like it that much. However, the one I ended up buying was directly above it on the website (although not listed in the catalog), so of course I snapped it up. Here's my Trajan quadrans with Hercules on the obverse, but a different reverse: Trajan, AE Quadrans, ca. AD 101 (Sear), Rome Mint. Obv. Diademed bust of bearded Hercules right, lion’s skin knotted at neck, IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GERM / Rev. Boar walking right, SC in exergue. 14.5 mm., 2.30 g., 6 h. RIC II 702, BMCRE II Trajan 1062 (ill. Pl. 43 no. 10); Sear RCV II 3248, Cohen 341. Purchased from London Ancient Coins, Aug. 2022; ex Bertolami Fine Arts, London, E-Auction 92, 02.10.2020, Lot 1235. 10
Ryro Posted September 19 · Supporter Share Posted September 19 (edited) Very nice Herkdrans! Here's a Herkdrans with the Erymanthian boar: I really like these quadrans types with the god/ goddess and their implements. And a couple others Edited September 19 by Ryro 6
